iPhone 4 and ios 5 draining the battery

Something that seems to be happening that I've noticed:

When "contacts" are open the refreash or sync dial appears at 5 sec intervals. So if that tracks, then that would be a reason my battery is dying quickly as it is working hard to do something. As far as I know my contacts are all there so it's not searching something for me. Any thoughts? And I know that this did not happen with previous ios. Additionally, the device is very warm just like it is working hard to find a signal, runs slow during phone related actions (voice mail retreval, contact editing) and even just freeze and crash.

Now i've gone into settings and put push noticification off and fetch to 30 mins and it stills continues to "refresh" every 5 seconds. What's up? Even changed settings and restarted phone. Maybe it's just my phone and it doesn't like the new ios 5, but I hope apple or someone has some ideas... by the way, turning every notification, refresh and the very features that use to work on the previous ios, IS NOT the goal.

Bugs happen, now to fix them.

Updated thought:

If I turn off "contacts" under settings within icloud, the search wheel doesn't continually run and the devise is much cooler... of course turning off features like that is not a fix, but does let me have better batter life. We'll see how it does overnight.

Other icloud features seem not to have the same issue of "searching."

Overnight 9 hours later:

(with the iCloud settings off for contacts) the phone still had power... Which is a major improvement for power, but again turning functions IS NOT a solution. To be sure, the phone is not as full as it use to before iOS 5, but it wasn't dead before changing the setting either. (42% after 9 hours off sitting from a full charge) Before ios 5, that same overnight would be 90+%

Phone was cool/room temp instead of warm from processing (which was another aspect of concern.) So now, to keep digging to see what other rouge processes might be killing battery life and usage.

Strange though, the one of the big deals with ios 5 was the feature to go wireless... But now one must keep their charger close by or you end up with a dead battery.

One step forward, two steps back. (anyone else find new iOS 5 less funtional?)

Charging update:

Battery went from 42% to 100% in just over an hour. That seems really quick (device was in the on mode and I did check email so it wasn't totally inactive) but with this new ios the phone just isn't as solid or predictable... at this point.

Of course with this "work around" with icloud and contacts: if I update anything contact related I'll have to manually switch icloud/contacts on and then off again. I wonder whatelse is draining the battery, any suggestions?

iCloud

Attempting to find the colperate of the power drain I have now turned off iCloud when not requiring those services. And as you may have guessed the power drain has stopped. No longer does the phone seem warm. Of course the main upgrade that ios 5 was seeming planned to do has become the issue.

So when I'm at my desk and it's charging I'll activate iCloud, but when it's time to work/play or otherwise go about my day iCloud gets turned off. What a disappointment, but hopefully there will be a fix or setup to correct this issues my iphone 4 is experiencing.

I faced the same problem on my iPhone 4 with iOS5.

Though i have not paid attention to the contacts like u did, my phone battery discharged from full charge (100%) to 42% in about 6 hours with just browsing my facebook. It used to be about 10-15% drain earlier on the iOS 4.3.5

I am contemplating to get iOS 4.3.5 back on my phone.

Apple has to really work on it and release a update to iOS5 sooner than thought.

By the way how is the battery drainage on the new iPhone4S ?

Possible news:

The mail exchange service has been something that seems to really be great. I have my apple account, but also not apple accounts for work and such. By using the microsoft exchange protacal my phone seems to be back in normal pre-ios 5 shape :)

If you have non-apple mail accounts I'd suggest using exchange and it makes all the accounts push and gets rid of fetch and poor battery life too boot.

I did ask about downgrading to the previous generation of ios at apple, they were not able to assist as "5" is the current version.

Post what you findout

I've used Exchange on my iphone 4 for the last year. After I upgraded to ios5, battery life dropped from 20 hours to about 6 hours. I used the app "System Status" to monitor cpu load. With Exchange installed and syncing, CPU was at 90-100%. I deleted exchange, cpu load went down, and battery life came back. Added Exchange back, battery life was still ok. However, one week later, the exact same thing happened again, and I had to delete and add Exchange back to resolve the issue. A power cycle did not help.

I had a similar battery life problem with syncing Contacts via iCloud. I ended up fixing it by noticing that certain types of Contact information wasn't being correctly synced to iCloud. Once I fixed the inconsistencies between iCloud and my iPhone, battery life got much better.

The mismatch I was seeing was multi-line addresses not being synced correctly. So on my iPhone, the address would be:

1234 Cherry Ln

Apt 101

Some City CA 98765

USA

but on iCloud it would be:

Apt 101

Some City CA 98765

USA

The 1st line of the address simply wouldn't sync. Changing it on my iPhone to 1234 Cherry Ln Apt 101 (on 1 line) fixed it.
