black screen past end of video when export

Please help I have a fully edited project. With multi clip angles, a good audio source, all synced up, When i export there is many minutes of black screen with no audio after my video stops. even though there is nothing in the timeline at all. I do not want this extra video of just black screen. But have tried for hours to get rid of it with no luck.

I have no idea what to do, and every time i go to export the extra black screen is there on my share preview.

Please help

Thanks

Ok I kind of get it, clicking the arrow points to different clips in my event browser. But to me that doesn't make sense. The timeline should show my project. So I have not idea how to just export the project. I have never been so confused as to what my current state of my project is. I deleted every thing started over and now i'm back to black screen even though there is no gap clip i know how to check for it now. I tihnk I'm with the rest to hate or dislike Final cut x, I will spend a more time reading the manual, but after staying up until 2:00 am last night, restarting 3 times. I'm no further ahead. I'm think I'm going to have to go back to Imovie, with one angle. Final cut is very confusing as to what my project is.

For example my procedure is.

  1. Import video clips
  2. import good mono audio
  3. syncronize clips
  4. view in timeline. (this is the point even after trimming i get the extra black. screen.
  5. From here i edit my cut points of my different angles using the blade tool.
  6. after all cuts are made
  7. right click and make new compound clip to simplyfiy.
  8. share.
  9. but i get the black extended screen.
  10. also seems no way to save a current state .
  11. if you quit and come back, your project is not where you left off.
  12. now i have to figure out which compound clip it is, now where is the audio.

If you want to post a screen grab, you need to use the little camera icon at the top of the text box where you type your message.

It sounds as though you have a gap clip at the end of your storyline. Click the thick black line after the last clip. If it highlights yellow (selected) delete it.

It's a good idea to press Shift+Z and fit the storyline to the window before you export. That way you can see if there are any gap clips (or audio) that will be included.

Well, so i finished up for the night, come back to my project, here, open my event. and nothing shows up in the timeline, but there is a new compound clip in my even library. I import that into the timeline and now the video does not have the black screen at the end but now will not export with my audio, even though when i play it in timeline my audio is playing just fine.

Just posted a video. The problem now started because I quit the program last night, in an effor to save what i have done. Well i opened the program up, thought i would leave off where i was stuck last night. and what do you know my project does not show up in my timeline, and now there is a new compound clip with no audio. 😠

after watching a compound clip video of some kid on youtube, I realized there are layers to these compound clips as you see in my youtube video showing my problem.

Please watch the video and help me.

I also learned that clicking horizontal lined button at the bottom left, shows all files being used and sure enough there was a gap clip in one of the compund clips. No matter what I did, I would not have know about it with out that file inspector. So i'm pretty sure that was causing my black screen problem.

Can someone explain why final cut does not restore the project in the timeline. This whole compund clip thing in the even viewer after you come back after a program quit is more than frustrating.

When you are clicking back and forward you are not going through layers, you are simply switching between the last things you had open in the timeline. You could be switching back to a clip from the event browser.

When you export you need to export the project. Make sure you are exporting the project. The timeline will have the project icon in the upper left and no subsets of the project.

Did you use an earlier version of FCP? It could have multiple sequences. You could switch between the tabs of opened sequences. Switching between the tabs displayed the sequence in the Timeline. The back and forward buttons FCPX switch between items that have been opened in the timeline. You can open multiple projects in the timeline, you can open clips and compound clips in the timeline, you can open single clips from the event browser. You are simply switching between items that have been opened in the timeline. You can go backward and forward between these just as you can go backward and forward in a browser where you have linked through multiple pages. You can go back to a previous page, or forward to a page you opened later.

Go to the project library. Find the project you're working on. Double click it. That's the project you want to export.

ok i figured out i wasn't adding my events into my project, I was just working on the event. So crucial to understand this. You can make full edits of events open in timeline. I thought that was my project... nope. to anyone else with the similar problem, click the movie roll button on the very bottom left. That will actually show your project. if you see no video there thats your problem. double click it, then import video to it. from the even browser.

Thanks to all who helped me! Thanks for your patinece. 🙂
