Drag and drop works well w/ mountain lion.

Also able to embed PDF docs in pages or word and drag to cloud.

You are able to export any docs from cloud to either word, pages or PDF. Also works with Excell, Numbers, Powerpoint and Keynote.

The only thing I see different from IDisk is the ability to share photos with non cloud users. Dropbox or the like applications will have to suffice.

Everything I read says they are not planning to offer this service because of the size requirements for storage, not to mention the security issuse of allowing web access to your account space from non-cloud users.

I was a previous IDisk user and grandfathered my 20Gb space to the cloud giving me 25GB. Way more than I need since photos are out.

This is old but just incase there is still some retardation going on and people have not figured out how to use it.

The simple way is as follow. Open up TextEdit or Pages or which ever of the Apple program it should open up on 10.8 the ability to use the iclound or local documents. Now you can move delete drag off or drag onto the clound what ever you want, you can even open up textedit and move what ever you have there to pages or back. I also used it on MS. Now stop trying to work like you do on Windows bloatware on the Mac and OSX.

Simple and effective reason I leave the Windows world to the Sheep.

Lets look at this another way. iCloud ONLY works with Apple applications. You need to use iWork or iHome apps. Its not sleek and functional like DRopbox, Skydrive, GoogleDocs all allow you drop whatever kind of document into a cloud and get it from anything. Not possible with iCloud. You can't even move your photos to iCloud without the most recent version of iPhoto. iCloud is YEARS behind all of the other apps I listed. They are also free to a certain amount of storage ranging from 5GB and up depending on which one you choose. I asked about copying a PDF file to iCLoud..."oh, just embed it into a Pages document"..Seriously? That's Apples' answer? I love the products, which I have many of- 2 iPhones, iPad2, Macbook Pro, and a Mac Pro tower which are all great. I just hate the way Apple is forcing its customers into their box and we can only use their toys in their yard.

I think your missing the point, Apple does not have to compete with everything in the market. iCloud to me was not about compiting with any of the above mentioned services. I look at iClound which will probably add more services in the coming year or two as a way for people who don't need the power you are talking about.

As for your PDF let me teach you what you seem not to get.

First open up a PDF file in priview go ahead I will wait... done. Good

Now go to File > Move To and pick iCloud. All done its ok your welcome.

Its a service for people who have certain need and nothing more, for those who need more PAY FOR IT. Its really that simple.

Mr. Kiljoy616,

I have really appreciated the helpful information I have received from hundreds of iCloud users -- until now. I think YOU miss the point. Many of us PAID for MOBILEME and expected ICLOUD to deliver the SAME service. And HAD you used ICLOUD as early as US, you would not have been able to upload PDF files. Hundreds of iCloud users havd made wonderful suggestions for uploading non-Apple product files to iCloud. So I need to teach you something now -- the meaning of killjoy is spoiled sport. I would add arrogant and mean-spirited to describe you. Done ... Good, I hope YOU get it.

Good for you! I was getting tired of offering solutions to people who only wanted to complain! I also subscribed to IDisk and had to make some adjustments for photos but I lived thru it. The convience of using the cloud seamless with all my devices is ok with me. I love my Macs and all the haters should by a PC and then they would really have something to ***** about!

Oh sorry but got it wrong. Kiljoy is not Killjoy.

Comes from my Army days KilJoy for "Killing you is my Joy" Don't forget 616 which is a take on religious poeple and their 666 which they got wrong and was actually 616 but of course doesn't sound as cool to the uneducated masses of bible thumping illeterates. Now sell your Mac get a PC with windows 8 and your a happy camper. I am using it and its not that bad.

Will restate what I said, iClound is not for you. Its not even for most super users. There are alternatives which are well priced for those who need more than a consumer based Cloud presense.

As for MobileMe it was a totally different service and Apple executives been smart at what they do, knows that its not where the money or iProduct users need. Apple big win is not to compete on price or useless wants of a minority of the population. Plenty of companies have products for those who need it.

Since there are alternatives to iCloud. It would seem that for now its been decided to go in a different route. I use dropbox for my business because it add services that make my life easier. I pay for it, write it off as expense at the end of the year an have a nice life not fixating on what could be. iCloud is my go to for connectivity of iProducts everything else its dropbox. Using to services is not a bad thing, dropbox is great for certain things and iCloud for others.

Either way Apple is not going to change which is why I like their products. Don't listen to the customer they are for the most part are clueless to they really need.

I too am pretty peeved that I cannot simply use iCloud as generic storage. I thought this was just a continuation of iDisk storage, but updated and fixed syncing issues. This really stinks. I have never really looked into the issue of utilizing the storage until just recently... after I updated all my macs to lion. Now I am screwed for using the native iCloud storage and, like many others have already mentioned, have to seek an alternate method of keeping files synced. I guess its google drive.

I am a student and take different computers to school depending on need. It would be great to have all my coding files in one repository in iCloud.... I really just assumed it would be possible.... I guess this is just another lesson in corporate greed. Why else would a company limit a product/service to its own solutions that require additional purchases. Perhaps the app integration will be so cool and needed that it will become a standard, but I do not see why one wouldn't create the "save" dialog/selection so that it worked with explorer or finder.

There's a way to trick iCloud into acting like a virtual folder for storing any kind of file you want. If you use Dropbox, you're probably pretty familiar with the concept.

To make your iCloud more like Dropbox, first make sure Documents & DataUser uploaded file is turned on in iCloud System Preferences.

Next, open the Finder window and hit Command + Shift + G. A dialogue box will open and inside. Type ~/Library. This will let you into your hidden Library Folder.

Once you are inside, scroll down the Mobile Documents. Don't bother anything inside that folder because they belong to applications that are already using your iCloud storage. However, you can now drop your own files and folders into this section.

"In addition to Apple's suite of productivity apps like Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, other app developers have the option to let you save stuff to your iCloud account. There aren't many third-party apps that do this at the moment, but expect to see a lot of apps to take advantage once more people upgrade to Mountain Lion."Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/10-icloud-tips-and-tricks-2012-8?op=1#ixzz28O6Q3n gF

The items you drop in this section will be pushed to the same folder on other Macs with Documents & Data enabled.
