iCloud is useles for anything except Apple's applications- iWork and iLife docs, iTunes, etc...If you have anything slse such as PDF's, MS Office, etc...you cannot save it to iCloud unless you want to attach it to an email or save in Pages or a compatible format. You will see suggestions for DropBox and stuff, but you are limited to 2 GB storage for the free versions... iDisk was the best solution they had for what you are looking for.

Unbelievable!!! I can't honestly believe that Apple are resorting to these shady Microsoft-esque tactics and deliberately entrapping people to use only Apple products in order to benefit from the platforms at all!

As an ex mobileme user who has paid for mobile me for the last few years, I was annoyed that Apple were suddenly making everything free for everyone. When I heard that Apple were going to be providing Mobile Me customers with 25 GB of cloud space, I was very pleased indeed.

Now, it seems, I cannot even use the space to any great advantage, because I can only store stuff from my iTunes account, and/or iWork (which I don't use anyway).

What I needed the space for was to increase productivity and make files and documents available for clients and employees in my business, and I can't even do that.

Give me my iDisk or DropBox, here I come. Why on earth would I want to pay for extra space in iCloud when I can't even use it the way I want to? I can pay about the same for space on dropbox and do whatever I want with the space.

Really annoyed with Apple. If there is something in the pipeline to resolve this, please let me know about it!

I'm still experimenting but I believe that you're incorrect. I took a folder and compressed it and I was able to upload the Zip file to iCloud.

On the other hand, Wuala appears to be a good bet, especially if you have at least one Lacie drive. Two gig is free and you get an extra ten gig for each Lacie drive that you own.

Same experience as JPrevels:

"I did it but didn't upload any file; and there isn't preferences icon in my iCloud"

There is no gear icon, no action icon, no nothing on the iWork portion of iCloud. just adds to buy the iOS versions. I know there is no Mac-to-Mac syncing across iCloud (idiotic), but does this mean you can't even use it to STORE documents? If so, 5GB seems like 1,000x too much space, since only my email gets stored there.

Am I missing something?

iCloud isn't a really good optionWhen iDisk close I will move to other option

I've been experimenting with Dropbox for photos and Wuala for other files. If you own at least one Lacie drive, you can get substantial storage with Wuala at no cost.
