how do i stop sync services agent?

I'm having a lot of trouble with syncing iCal and Outlook (Office for Mac 2011). MS Support page indicates I need to install a service pack, but the service pack won't install on my macbook - error says it can't find a version of Office on the Mac HD. I'm trying to re-install office, but the intaller wants me to shut down the syncservicesagent application... can anyone explain how I do this??
