where do your files go when you back them up to your computer?

I updated my software and it said it backed up my files to my computer but everything is deleted off of my phone, and when I wastrying to restore my phone it kept asking for a password, when I put in the password, it kept saying it was incorrect, though it wasnt! So my question is where do I go to retrieve my lost files, if was backed up some where?
