iTunes doesn't mount audio CDs. Help?

So, I have the latest version of Leopard (10.5.8) and the latest version of iTunes (10.5) on my MacBookPro. When I insert any audio CD into my drive, it makes a few whirring and clicking noises for about 30-45 seconds, then spits the CD back out. I have tried with 5 different CDs - they're not scratched or damaged, and are commerically purchased CDs. They don't show up on the desktop, in Finder, and certainly not in iTunes.

Things I've Already Tried:

• fiddling with iTunes preferences (disabling CD track names from Internet)

• fiddling with System Preferences (CD & DVDs - told it to "ignore")

• basic reset/reset in Safe Mode

• downgraded to iTunes 9.2.1

• performed a clean install of iTunes 10.5

• reset system permissions with OnyX

• cleared caches (also with OnyX)

• reset PRAM as a desperate last effort

All DVD's work fine and iTunes otherwise runs smoothly. Does anyone have any other ideas/workaround/help? Thank you so much in advance.

In System Preferences / CD's and DVD's you need to select an app you want to read the auido CD's.

and certainly not in iTunes.

When you insert a music CD. Click the pop up menu select iTunes.

If it's not available from the list click Open other application. Navigate to the Applications folder select iTunes.

A blank CD shows up fine. Disk Utility showed nothing, however, when I inserted CDs.

I tried an alternative music management application, Songbird, and after deleting every non-media file associated with iTunes, all problems were solved and all of my audio CDs ripped perfectly fine. This tells me that the problem is with iTunes, not my computer. So until this problem gets specifically addressed, I'll just use Songbird and another 3rd party program to sync with my iPhone.

Thank you very much for the ideas.
