How do I get rid of "other" storage or why is there so much dedicated to it?

PLEASE HELP!

I have an iPod touch 32Gb 4th generation with:

- 19Gb of music

- 2Gb of TV Shows

- 3Gb of Apps

- 3.3Gb of "Other"

Here is the troubleshooting attempted:

- Not syncing music or TV Shows.  Result: I still have 2.1Gb of "Other

- Not syncing apps. Results: No difference

- Restoring iPod with lastest backup: No difference

- Restoring iPod from scratch and putting back everything back on: No difference.

I am out of ideas.

Please, please help!

Thanks.

I upgraded to IOS 5 yesterday on my iphone 4, it looked like it hadn't sync'd my music and I was over capacity with "other". I checked all the things I wanted and chose some extra pictures I wanted on my phone (ignoring the over capacity) and sync'd it with my computer. that gave me my music back and removed the excessive "other' (which is now .87 GB)... dont know if this will be the answer... but you took things off, try adding something.

I am getting the same deal...17gb of other and was looking for the same answer.

    My "other" keeps going up...

    I am now at 3.6Gb.

To reduce the "other" to its normal, less than about 0.5 GB, you need to restore you iPod.  Sometimes restore to factory defaults/new iPod is required since sometmes the large other is also in the backup.

It's not that easy. I did that and got rid of the bulk but I am at .65 gb of other. Some App or something is hogging it. Which Apps or whatever eat up "other" space?

I guess this is where Windows users get it right. There really needs to be some sort of defrag or way to find out what this stuff is...and btw I got Diskaid and cleared out the file folders etc.

I realy wasn't looking forward to re-downloading  after doing a restore, but my iPod looked like this:

    75.9 GB Audio

    33.9 GB Video

    21.7 GB Other

I bit the bullet and did a restore and the 21.7 GB is now .20 GB

Well, it will never be zero, if that is what you are trying to acheive.  Apps and the iOS need space for cache, temp or working file space, app-specific or in-use specific settings and a host of things.  There will always be some space occupied by "other", just like a computer will always have a tmp directory of some sort.

Things that often take up a lot of space:

email message cache (and trash, if you have a POP account and keep deleted messages on the phone), safari cache, use of location service enabled apps can often enlarge cache since GPS temp data gets stored in "other"... the list is long

I was having trouble with Other showing up on my iphone 4, after doing backups, restores and DFU's it was still showing up on itunes !! after a bit of searching i found a solution, hope it helps !!

Do your backup on itunes just in case !!

Go online, type in diskaid, get it from digidna.net and download that and follow the instructions

Open that on your computer, go to media, delete F files

But also i discovered i had a video that wasnt showing up on my cameraroll but showed up on diskaid !!

Once that was deleted my Others dropped from 7.6% to 0.32%

    Hope this helps

    Let me know

    Joe

I also ran into a problem when the "other" has grown to nearly 7 gigabytes in about two weeks of periodic use.

If it's cache and temporary space for applications, sorting, and other things - how the system adjusts its?

Under what conditions is it decreasing?

For example, if the "other" has grown to 10 Gb or even more, and I was left with only 7 Gb free capacity, the only way to regain the 10 GB - this is reset and recovery? It's not a very convenient way...

Doesn't anyone ever get an answer that works for this problem. When your "Other" is more than anything else on your iPhone and all suggestions don't work where is Apple's solution. Why do we not here of an upcoming fix?

Bree - what I did worked - I had the same problem in october last year - and everything has been great since then

I was over capacity with "other".

I connected my iphone to my computer

    selected it in itunes

I checked all the things I wanted to sync and chose some extra pictures I wanted on my phone (ignoring the over capacity)

    I pressed sync

That gave me my music back and removed the excessive "other"

Try it and ignore the fact that it looks like it won't work - it did for me

    Latest iPhone 4s 62GB

I am at a loss with this as well.  In a desperate attemp to reduce the "other" turned off iCloud, deleted all my photos and video and reduced content down to:

    8.5 GB for audio

    1.64 GB Apps

    .01 GB books

and still my phone is blocked up with...

    51.8 GB for other

    and...

    5.2 GB Over capacity

I don't see any responses on these forums from Apple for an official fix or systems update.  Does anyone know if they are monitoring these forums for feedback and addressing this issue?  Has anyone tried returning their phone?

Due to these memory issues my phone has become almost unusable.  I can't take much video, the voice memo crashes after 10 seconds, have to delete several apps to install any new ones and I can't add more than 10 Gigs of music.

    Apple... please help!
