Battery life for iPhone4 after ios5 update

I updated my iPhone 4 to ios5 this week and the change in battery life is shocking. I've used my phone for an hour and 13 minutes straight since taking it off charge and it's burnt through 32% of my battery.

This week I've been reading all the tips to improve my battery but nothing has helped so far. I'm fed up, my phone is only 10 months old and the ios5 update is obviously a poor quality release (I'm a software project manager).

What can I do? Are Apple looking into this issue? Has the cause been identified or is there a massive software vs hardware conflict with this release.

While typing this I e lost another 3% in 7 minutes.

Any hope appreciated.

Thanks

NO problem. The battery life on my 4S is MUCH better than it was on my 3 GS. I was worried about it, because the tech spec says the standby life is only 200 hours vs 300, but for all my normal use I end each day with a much higher state of charge than I did with the 3GS. I still charge every night overnight, but I could go 2 days if I wanted to now; with the 3GS I barely made it through a day.

I leave EVERYTHING on all the time - BlueTooth, Location Services, Notifications, Push email.

Update: There might be hope - over the weekend I only had to charge the phone once as the battery drain seemed to resolve itself. iCloud was on, push for email was on, bluetooth was on, wifi was on, location services were off aside from Find My iPhone. I kept cycling the battery over the week, and restored as new one more time, and it seemed to do the trick.

Of course I ended up upgrading to the 4S late yesterday and I'm back in the same boat, but I'll give it a week of cycling before I decide whether to return it.

I read a rumor on CNET that Apple is quietly investigating this problem, so supposedly they're on it.

I too want to throw my hat into the ring. Better yet, I am about to take my beloved iPhone 4 and throw it out the window. The battery life is so bad, I have to charge it 4 times per day now instead of once per day. The whole phone at times runs very hot to the touch. I have disabled bluetooth and many of the locations, reloaded the phone compeltely 2 times, and drained the battery 6 times now. Nothing is working. In addtion, mail hangs up or completely crashes. The phone is sluggish at times as well. I am having the same problem on my iPad 2 after upgrading with mail crashing etc.

Also, my iCloud does not update between my Macbook Pro, my iPad2 and my iPhone4. If I change something in contacts or iCal on my laptop, it seems to update the iPad2 and the iPhone4, however if I try and change a contact or appointment from the iPhone or the iPad it does not update the laptop.

If Apple does not come up with a solution soon I will go out of my mind!

There's a serious lack of information available about this problem anywhere.

I have a battery case that I usually reserve for traveling when I know that charging may be an issue. I am now having to use this permanently. Despite deactivating location services and reducing data hungry apps to a minimum a full charge on my iPhone 4 will last less than 12 hours with minimum usage.

I have iCloud and find my friends deactivated and pretty much only have push email and Facebook active and of corse there is the usual web browsing. None of my habits have changed since the upgrade but I am at a loss as to what is eating my battery life. There are some other issues post upgrade such as very slow Facebook app, very slow web access in general and wifi issues. The only factor that could possibly affect these is ios5.

Come on apple get it sorted!

The battery loss is not just you, but it also isn't everyone. The Apple store only has a limited number of things they can do, both because of training and corporate communications standards. You will find more useful advice in these user forums, because users are not restricted by either of those issues.

Battery loss is a chronic problem with iPhones of all generations and all iOS versions. It is a symptom, not a problem; you need to find what is the actual problem that is causing the battery loss. It is almost always an app that is either sending data or trying to send data. This can be a 3rd party app, but can also be a built in.

With iOS 5 iCloud becomes another contender for the problem, which is probably why there are more reports from iOS 5 users than there are from other versions (although every version has had its share).

Mail is the biggest offender; try deleting any Push email accounts and rebooting. If battery life comes back add them again. It isn't the fact they exist that causes problems, its the fact that they sometimes get "stuck" in loops that never resolve.

Beyond that investigate apps that use Notifications. Try turning all Notifications off and rebooting (the reboot is important as it kills pending background processes). If the problem resolves add them back a few at a time.
