iMessage internationally?

My wife is working in the US at the moment. I'm in the UK.

We've been using iMessage pretty successfully, and we've both got the 'send iMessage as SMS' backup option turned off.

Last night, however, a block of messages seemed to get sent as SMS from her, rather than iMessage.

Is there a foolproof way to avoid this happening? Perhaps keeping JUST our Apple ID emails in a contact, rather than phone numbers too, so there's absolutely no chance of them being sent as texts?

iPhone 4, iOS 5

I had/have this......

If there is something up with iMessage or the recipient is out of data coverage it will send it as a regular SMS. Which, if it is an international number will cost more to send!

You can turn off sending as SMS, under Setting, General, Messages, Send As SMS...

That way they will only be sent as iMessages but I think that stops regular SMS messages to non-iPhone IOS 5 users.

So, all in all a bit of a catch 22!
