why does my iPad attempt network access when in airplane mode

Hi,

I have a disturbing situation I have noticed on my home network.

last night I switched off all my devices. MacBooks, iPads, iPhones. i placed all the iOS devices into airplane mode and i did a hard shutdown on the Mac's

this morning when i woke up I found my network router had logged attempts by my devices to access the network.

not to mention that external IP addresses were attempting to access the devices spcifically when the router routes all traffic to one server and has all other ports closed except port 80.

How can that be....

MacBook 13" 2.4Ghz 4GB 500GB (aluminum Body), Mac OS X (10.6.6), 1 2TB TC, iMac (G4), MacBook (plastic), iPad, iPad 3G, iPhone 4.
