iOS 5.0 Music app TERRIBLE

So far, I've only updated my iPad2 to iOS 5. Because of the Music app experience alone, I will not update my iPhones.

Music will only play a minority of my songs, with no clear rhyme or reason: Songs copied in from physical CD's, songs purchased through iTunes store recently, songs purchased long ago. All digital music was purchased with my Apple ID.

It either claims to be playing, but there's no motion of the progress bar and no sound, or it flies through a series of songs within a second, making no sound, then finally landing on one that it actually plays correctly, or pretend to play (with no motion of the progress bar and no sound). It does seem to consistently play the same songs successfully.

All songs play fine on my iPhones and my computer. I'm using iTunes 5.0 on OS X 10.6.8 (I can't update to Lion because I need a few Rosetta programs).

I will try to stop syncing of all music next (to delete it from the iPad), then resume syncing to see if it helps. Any way to reinstall the Music app or all of iOS 5 itself??? Thanks.

OK, after deleting all music and then resyncing, the songs that won't play are now grayed out. It appears that whole albums are grayed out. Some are recent purchases on my computer and some are older purchases. All were purchased with the same Apple ID.

Interestingly the big chunk of yellow "Other" in the capacity bar shrunk tremendously after deleting and resyncing the music.

What does it mean if songs appear in the Music app on the iPad but are grayed out??

Well, making progress... Apparently the new sync process takes longer than before, especially the first sync after deleting music from the iPad. The grayed out songs are songs that will eventually be synced onto the iPad when it is reconnected. Apparently someone disconncted the iPad to charge their iPhone after only 3 hours of syncing. After syncing overnight, the grayed out songs are no longer grayed out, and they play. There are still songs that won't play. Rather than the app getting stuck on them, it now just skips over them, so deleting music then resyncing has helped a lot. Still trying to figure out why some songs will play on my computers and iPhones, and under iOs 4 on the iPad 2, but not under iOS 5 on the iPad 2.
