I was getting the old email address as my apple ID listed with no way to change it and with a box to enter my password. This was happening in the App Store on the iPad and in the settings > sign in. I tried this so many times on the iPad, turning it off and on, syncing a few times. I even went to the iforgot site, but that seemed to only give me the option to change the password.

Now, all of a sudden at the sign in, from the settings, it gave me a box that allowed me to enter the new email as the apple ID and the password worked! Yea! So maybe it just took a while for the iPad to register the change??? Anyway, thanks for your help.

That I can't explain. The old ID will appear when you want to update apps that were obtained with it. You can not change that. Anything obtained from the iTunes store is PERMANENTLY associated with the the ID that was used to obtain it. IDs can not be merged and items can not be transferred from one ID to another.

Another confusing aspect of Apple IDs: Effective approximately a year ago, the NAME of an Apple ID must have the form of an email address. However, the email address that's associated with the ID does not have to be the one that's in the name!
