PrinterProxy?

Greetings:
I'm running 10.3.7 with an Epson C86 printer. Each time I print a document, the statement comes up that the "application printerproxy quit", and wants to know if I want to report this to Apple. Each document does print correctly. Any help to alleviate this will be appreciated.

Hi Again Papa Baker!

Here are the complete instructions to reintall the Epson C86.

*EPSON C86 REINSTALL
* Download the most current driver from www.epson.com.

* Before moving the folder & files listed below, to a "Temporary Epson Trash Folder", open "Printer Setup Utility" and delete the C86.
* "Quit' "Printer Setup Utility"

* Move the files (Posted in Capitals) to the "Temporary Epson Trash Folder" on the Desktop

HD > Applications >
EPSON PRINTER UTILITY (Alias)

HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Preferences >
COM.EPSON.IJPRINTER.UTILITY.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.CUSTOMPRESETS.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTCENTER.PLIST
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTERPROXY.INTERNAL_MODEM.PLIST (This one
has not been recreated, as yet)
COM.APPLE.PRINT.PRINTINGPREFS.PLIST

HD > Library > Printers >
EPSON (Folder) Only move this folder if you have no other
Epson products

I also had a "OS X booklet.pdf" (Epson) that I had saved in my "Documents" folder. You will get a new one. After the installation, I replaced it. You may not have saved your original one. It's no big deal, there's really not much in it, In fact I don't remember ever opening it, before today!

* Quit ALL running Applications

* "Repair Permissions" using "Disk Utility" in the "Utilities" folder

* Dig out your Epson C86 "Start Here" instruction quick sheet, for reference
* Unplug the USB cable from the Mac & then the C86
* Re-attach the USB cable to the C86 & then the Mac
* Turn on your C86
* Double click on: "epson11518.sea.hqx" to unzip
* Double click on: "epson11518.sea" to expand
* Follow the prompts & instructions
* When the "Vise" installer opens in a window, double click it to start the install
* When the installation is complete, turn off the printer & restart your Mac.
* "Repair Permisions" again
* Turn on the C86
* Open "Printer Setup Utility"
* "You have no printers available" will appear. Click "Add"
* Select "Epson USB" in the contextual menu
* Click on "Stylus C86" to highlight
* Add "Page Setup:" select "All", from the contextual menu
* Click "Add"
* Quit "Printer Setup Utility"

The images below, that are left on the "Desktop", can be trashed, unless you prefer to keep the installer.

Well Ali, no luck. I followed your directions and got to the point of going into the "Printer Setup Utility", and I got the "PrinterProxy Application" has unexpectedly quit. I couldn't get past that point. But, I am still able to print with the PP statement still coming up. Not sure what the next step is. Maybe I just need to live with this little quirk. I do appreciate your help in this.

Papa Baker,

At which point did you get the message?

This step:
*Before moving the folder & files listed below, to a "Temporary Epson Trash Folder", open "Printer Setup Utility" and delete the C86.

Or:
*When the installation is complete, turn off the printer & restart your Mac.
* "Repair Permisions" again
* Turn on the C86
* Open "Printer Setup Utility"
this one?

Ali:
In regards to your question about another printer, the anwser is "no". The C86 has been the only one. The famous statement came up when I had expanded the "epson11518.sea", did the "Repair Permissions" and turned on the C86. When I then went to the "Printer Setup Utility" is when the PP statement came up. Thanks for staying on this with me.

Ali:
I have not contacted Epson tech support; but will plan to do that. I did check the site you provided, and, to be honest, I really don't want to spend any money on this, especially since I am able to print. I will leave this little problem open and get back to you with Epson's recommendations. Your continued help has been much appreciated.

Papa Baker,

I hope Epson can solve this mystery, but if not,

Printer Setup Repair is Shareware.

How much does it cost to use?
Printer Setup Repair is shareware. That means you can download it and try it out for free, but if you use it you should register your copy. An unregistered copy of Printer Setup Repair 4.x or Printer Setup Repair 5.x will run as a trial version for 7 days. A great deal of time and trouble went into the research and construction of this application. Please visit the registrations page to purchase a license code. Your support will help in the continued development of this and other useful Mac OS X applications.

And I just realized I sent you to the Tiger Version Review Page of VersionTracker.
Here's the Panther Page, where you can read the reviews. The Epson C86 is mentioned there.

" Yes, this program really does rock! I've had 2 problems printing to my Epson C86, and PSR fixed both of them!"

Wellllll, I did download the shareware program, and no change whatsoever. It did bring up the fact the file listed below is missing. I thought it might have worked in that the SETUP almost launched. But, alas, no cigar. Part of my upcoming problem is that I am going to be away from this printer for the next 3-4 weeks. I will forward all of this info to Epson and see what they say. Again, thanks so much Ali for the time you have devoted to this.

OK Papa Baker!

From the sounds of it, I fear it isn't an Epson problem. You might have the same problem with any printer. Let's hope I'm wrong!

Open the Utilities Folder
Control Click on the Printer Setup Utility
From the contextual menu, select Show Package Contents
Open the Contents folder
Open the SharedSupport folder
Click once on PrinterProxy to highlight
Do a Get Info by pressing Command + I keys
Click the triangle for Ownership & Permissions
You can What does it say here?
Click the triangle for Details
Owner: What does it say here?
Access: Here?
Group: Here?

You are like the Everyready Bunny, you just keep attacking this issue. I do appreciate it. Unfortunately, I will not be back at that printer until the 2nd week in March. That printer is at our lake property and I carry a laptop back and forth. Soooooo, will try this once I get back up there. From the sounds of your post, this could be a real problem. Anything you want to prepare me for? Thanks again Ali.
