I had the same problem today, once I put the phone on airplane mode then turned it off it showed service again. If this continues I will take it back to the store.

RE : Key Tapper

No one else is to blame but Apple! They are the only ones that designed and built the iPhone! iOS 5.x is very buggy and iPhone 4S is a lemon!

Blame no one else but Apple! Other people on Android, WP7 and BB have no issues with SIM cards other than APPLE!

Hopefully you are done with this thread, as we paid big money for our iLemon devices! Apple needs to get back to the drawing board.

'Ilemon'. Ah you are so witty.

No I disagree with you. You are another muppet.

Don't like your phone? Move on. Sure

But for me it was the Microsim VS being in a plane.

Is that apples fault? Hard to say yet.

The 4s is the best of the iPhones yet.

But people's comments here make me feel sorry for the support people.

Seriously. When people suggest you 'call your own number' to fix a phone that can't make calls

Or insist that apple replace a thousand dollar device cause their sim is busted?

Now you want to diss apple because my telecom Sim died?

Come on guys. Slow down. Use your brains.

If you have no service - go to a store - ask them to try your sim in another phone. Try a new one in yours.

If its not that - then it Might be your phone.

I took a video of the phone making calls while displaying "No Service" and receiving calls while the phone was displaying "No Service" because Apple gave me the run around and wouldn't acknowledge the problem. If you would like to see the videos I would be glad to pass you the youtube link so you can view it. You are the muppet to go along with anything Apple reps tell you and not have an open mind that possibly, there is something wrong with the software/hardware.

I too had 4 SIM cards and 4 iPhone 4S 's. All combinations had the "No Service" message. All those "bad" SIM cards you are suggesting worked just fine in my previous iPhone.

It looks like the new iPad is no different from several issues - Wi-Fi both on 3G and non 3G units are being reported too! And people keep buying Apple products when they just don't care or test their stuff properly. Apple is the new Microsoft! It will bite them in the very near future! I have been an Apple user for many years and just last week I started seriously looking at Android and Windows Phone. I was overly impressed at how fast and fluid WP7 really was compared to my iOS!

Apple should seriously get back to the drawing board and get these problems under control and in a more timely manner.

Guys I would serioulsy recommend you replace your iPhone's until you get one that works. When Apple get's a lot of returns they will question it and they will get to the bottom of the problem - hundreds to thousands of dollars later per person. Keeping these defective devices will do you no good.

1. Call Apple care - lodge the complaint

2. Get to an Apple store and show them the problems

3. Get a replacement.

4. Keep a log of everything - all proof, documents etc for future reference

5. Repeat process until you get a device that works as a PHONE!

This is your warranty! You paid for a device to work and it doesn't. I am afraid the only option here is to replace the devices as I did 4x and got one that works better than the rest did.

Replacing the SIM didn't help either. iOS 5 is a very buggy OS and iPhone 4S has to have some sort of issues/defects with the 3G chipsets!

i have exactly the same issue, will go from 4 bars to 0 bars, no signal no service, all i am doing is holding the phone and typeing a text msg, im also on my 3rd iphone 4s at mo, they have recommended i now replace sim, which i have, and restore iphone to factory settings which i did, and restore from cloud which i did and guess what... it didnt fix it, so i guess im onto iphone 4s number 4 nxt wk, such a shambles, this is a great phone, great features, shame it doesnt do one of the most simple tasks, make and recevie calls !!!! go apple !!!

Chiming in...

I have an iPhone 4S, MD239PA model, came with iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) out of the box, and the first 3 weeks was fine, suddenly the phone heats up while using a SIM with Alternate Line Service feature (swapped with other non-ALS SIM, and didn't heat up). Update to iOS 5.1, and after 2 weeks, the phone having "No Service" issue, or shows "Searching..." status for some time (and eventually "No Service") while on good coverage (old phone shows 4 out of 5 signal bar).

2 days ago, succesfully got signal, quite happy that it can reach network, but I was so impatient, so that I tried turning on Airplane mode, and turn it off again, then no more luck -- "No Service" again.

Tried out all suggestion around the web, but none really fix the problem.

Haven't tried to change the SIM to 64K or 128K though. I'm a traveller, and I would like to be independent for using any kind of SIM card.

I had ipad2 running with any SIM Card you like, and had no problem with batteries nor signal.

I wish the baseband or any setting used for this ipad2 can be transferred to my iPhone 4S.
