iPhone 4S "no service" problem

hello all,

Just got my iPhone 4S 18hrs ago and it wen to "no service" like 3 times (so far)!!

  • I have changed carrier setting to manual I can select my network but still "no service"
  • I turned on then off "airplane mode" it goes searching... then "no service"
  • it only work when I restart or reinsert the SIM

Is this common? do I have to worry ?

Appreciate your inputs.

Thanks,

I had the same problem today, once I put the phone on airplane mode then turned it off it showed service again. If this continues I will take it back to the store.

I couldn't comment earlier, but my No Service problem went away when I went to iOS 6.1 beta 2, but I'm a goodie goodie and didn't want to break NDA commenting on a beta. Anyway I haven't had a No Service issue, or bars but no network since beta 2 all the way through beta 5 and the most recent official iOS 6.1.

Could have all been a coincidence and AT&T might have fixed their network issues in the ensuing time, but I'd recommend udpating to 6.1

Jessica not sure what you have done but a few things that may help. I had this on 1 4s one weekend all of a sudden when we were in a low signal area. Then it kept doing it when I returned home. I took the sim card out and cleaned the contacts then re-inserted and its not done it since. Been about 4 months now.

Also a quick try is to flip on Airplane mode then turn it back off. That made my particular device work for a bit then it would fail again at some random time. Cleaning the sim and reseating it has solved it totally.

Here is an Apple document with tips as well http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4429

Today is the 14th day after I tried one of the method on your link (#3), there is improvement. I added small piece of tape on my SIM card where the metal section touches the SIM tray, remember, only on very small area where it touches. Too many tape, even on the other side of the SIM, will resulting your Iphone can't detect your SIM ("SIM Failure", "No SIM" message)

This is the longest time I use my phone without "No SIM" or "SIM Failure" message. Signal bar improve 1-2 bars, and battery runs a little bit longer.

I hope it will permanently solve the problem

Thank you for the link, lupe911

sorry for that...

below are my phone condition and my habit, maybe all of you can find the similarity of these "No SIM", "SIM Failure" notification.

- Factory unlocked

- Never drop the phone or bang it into something

- I live at the weak signal area (1 bar max), but there is always a signal. after I put tape on my SIM, the signal increase into at least 2 bars)

- I like to play heavy game for 1-2 hours so it makes my phone getting warm at the back side

- I've replace my SIM card twice, and after lupe911 post, I realized, all of the them have metal part touch the SIM tray

- I use rubber case and put them in the leather pouch

If I find my phone in "no service", surely I will let all of you know first.

I would like to make my one and only contribution to this forum now!

After two years of absolute misery with this iphone constantly going off service for hours at a time I've given up. I see that you guys have complained for all this time and still Apple don't have a fix for it... well I have a fix for it...it's a big hammer. Enough is enough, for the sake of my sanity it's going in the trash can and tomorrow I shall buy a new phone (yet to be decided) not an Apple phone.

I did think about selling it on to someone else, but in all conscience I could not bring myself to bring all that misery on some other unsuspecting person. So it's goodnight from me and good luck with "No Service" in the top left hand corner of your iphone, it may go away for a while, but it will always return.

Guys you won't beleive what I am saying, and I am not paid by Apple, yet for me this problem of NO SERVICE is a puzzle I can't solve but please listen to my story:

I had the same problem before having no service most of the time on my phone; till I started making noise with Apple Center and my service provider. I have 2 iphones 4 models.

and guess what a miracle, suddenly both phone started working perfectly and that was a month ago.

please don't ask me to explain as whom to blame, Apple or the Service Line provider ????

a million dollar question?????

I just had this, this morning

Only just realised @ 11:25 that phone's not rung all morning, and it was saying 'no service'

We're in a good reception area at work, so no idea why it's not connecting

Tried a text, didn't go.

Rang the phone, straight to voicemail

Flight mode on/off made no difference

Turned phone off and back on and vwallaaahh, full signal strength 😐

We have a lousy signal at home, so I wonderif it brought the 'no service' with it from home?
