I had the same problem today, once I put the phone on airplane mode then turned it off it showed service again. If this continues I will take it back to the store.

Same thing: After 5.0.1 update on 4S, "no service" started appearing regularly. Call AT&T, they say Apple, talk to Apple, they say AT&T. I don't care who's fault it is, I just want a working cell phone. The fact that I had perfect service for almost 3 years in Portland, and after the 5.0.1 update I have an Ipod touch 4S, makes me think the problem is Apple. In my experience, as long as your apple product is working, it is an enjoyable experience. However, if the product doesn't work, Apple service is the absolute worst I have ever dealt with. In my experiences with Apple service, they try and deny the problem hoping that you will just accept the problem and go away. I have never had a good experience with Apple service. The fact that there is 6 pages of feedback describing the problem and have Apple give me the run around is unacceptable. I am an understanding and calm, patient person, but my experence trying to get this resolved is testing that. I need to have a reliable cell phone for work, as being on call at night, so now I have my bosses 5 yrs old flip phone so I know that I can receive a call if somebody needs to get a hold of me. Apple please swallow your pride and help!! Problem not going away

Called Apple Care China just now. The first lady couldnt solve my problem so she got me a "senior engineer" to answer my question. I told the guy I started to experience the problem after install IOS 5.1. The "senior engineer" insists there is nothing wrong with iphone 4S nor IOS 5.1. He claims the no signal problem is a result of the current mobile network in China being incompatible with iPhone 4s, as the model is currently not out in China yet.

I don't know if this is true. Does everyone here with the same problem has a similar background (i.e.brought back iphone 4s from another country, as iPhone 4s is not out in where you live yet)?

hello guys. After a hard night, i managed to find a solution for our problem.

in order to fix the "no service" issue, not able to reciece/send calls or sms, please follow these steps.

but before telling you how to fix it, you must know that this problem is caused by firmware and hardware issue. the main hardware issue is the sim card reader hardware in the 4s. it somehow freez and stop working whenever a 64 K micro sim card is placed. and as my research showed that 40 % of micro sim cards all over the world are 64 K while the others are 128 K. switching your sim card to a 128 K sim will fix it for sure ( if you follow my instructions ). and for some people in India, Brazil, Lebanon and such coutries where complaints are high, i advice you to buy a regular 128 sim card ( not micro sim ) and cut it by yourself and i promise you that it will work. But if your phone allready frezzed before and showed the errors, the possibilty that it will work by just switching the sim card is low.

SO AFTER PLACING THE NEW SIM CARD

1- download latest itunes 10.5.1

2- downloas ios 5.0.1 ( from itunes not from iphone device )

3- restore as new iphone (to avoid any remaining traces of previous corruption caused by hardware error)

4- Go to Settings --> Phone --> Sim Pin and turn it OFF

5- Turn On airplane mode and wait 15 seconds

6- Turn OFF airplane mode

7- Go to Settings --> Carrier --> Automatic ( turn it off and select your network manually )

AND THE PROBLEM IS FIXED

ILL BE HAPPY TO KNOW YOUR COMMENTS

EDDERGAM - I'm glad this solution worked for you, and I believe it will help most people who are using the 64k sim. Unfortunately for me this has not solved the problem.

My network is O2 (UK) who I have spoken to and they say they only use 128k micro sims. I have had a replacement sim from them recently and performed a clean restore, but for me the problem continues - major drop off with NO SERVICE that can only be returned to service by turning the iPhone off and back on again, and also the complate opposite which is a false 3G signal when I am deep underground on London transport.

I have an appointment at the Apple store this coming Monday, so I will report back my findings them.

Im having the same problem in Lebanon, the provider didnt get back to me yet on the 64/128K SIM,

however once Im checking for an update on itunes, im getting a "1630 error" stating that the carrier has blocked something....anyone getting it ?

...and yes it ***** big time to have to wait for apple to find a solution, btw and just for the record I have a friend with a $s and facing none of the problems all of the above are....weird, Im going to check the IMEI and compare, will let you know what happens

Yes i am facing exatcly same issue, bought iphone from Finland and in India have vodafone network. it was working fine till i upgraded to ios 5.0.1 and from then on no service. Apple support did not give any solution. They say the phone was not tested with carriers in India so you should have not bought from another country. It was a ridiculous statement to make even though i informed them that this iphone was working perfectly fine with ios 5.

As of now i am still struggling with the phone.

hey guys

i had bought an iphone 4s 32GB BLACK from uk and now when I am back in India I have the same problem getting on my nerves day and day out. Anyhow, to my research, I think its all happening because of the sim cards that are 64K and apple iphone 4s being much superior in hardwares requires sim card of 128/256k. But the most hurting part is that airtel does not provide sim cards higher than 64k as a cost cutting technique.

I was at the 'genius bar' in south Florida yesterday after a 45 minute wait. I had five bar service and could not duplicate the problem. I also complained of short battery life. The tech said he had not heard of either problem....but he also went to settings and had me 'send reports to Apple'. Then he did some more buttons which I could not see. When I told him this all happend after 5.0.1, he said that update was made to improve battery life; and reportedly it worked for some and not others. I also asked why I had five bars deep inside a crouwed shopping center and he admitted they have an internet repeater cell in the store. He did offer to replace my phone, but said it might take a couple of weeks to send it in and get the new one back. He said another update is planned to further address the battery issue. I don't know what he did (if anything) but have not had 'no signal' problem for 24 hours. I stiil have a battery life issue.

I read on another post that reducing the polloing interval to the network can improve battery life. Maybe the 5.0.1 'fix' reduced the interval and some networks lose signal when the are not polled often enough. I have ATT; and maybe they are seeing the problem and have addressed it. Their biggest base and selling point is the iPhone.

Not sure this helps anybody.... but it is additional information
