Q: iPhone 4S "no service" problem

hello all,

Just got my iPhone 4S 18hrs ago and it wen to "no service" like 3 times (so far)!!

  • I have changed carrier setting to manual I can select my network but still "no service"
  • I turned on then off "airplane mode" it goes searching... then "no service"
  • it only work when I restart or reinsert the SIM

Is this common? do I have to worry ?

Appreciate your inputs.

I am having some what similar problem. had been using my iPhone perfectly in Maldives with our own carreir since October. Just 1-2 weeks back I am facing similar problem. I have updated to 5.0.1 soon after it was released and the phone was working fine.

When ever I try to call the call cannot be completed, instead it just appears calling. I checked with the other end and it seems some are receiving my calls but cannot hear anything from my side. End neither could I end the call. When i press END it shows ending...and it does not stop until I restart the phone. It had frequanted for passed 3 days and it is really frustrating as I unvested huge amount of money to buy this phoen from London Apple store.

Also the same happens to SMS. It just shows sending and after a while it shows failed. But some of the messages had reached the other end it seems. Also this probelm is using up all my battary. and the phone gets heated as it keeps on working I suppose.

All teh remaining functions works completely except for the extreme battery heat up when using camera...

Hope apple could solve this problem qucikly as I am using my phone for work purpose as well...

After 10 days in a very poor coverage area, I didn't get the issue even once. My wifi was actually deactivated. Now I'm back at home, need my wifi on, and I keep on getting that 'no signal'.

Can you guys indicate if you have it without wifi on?

As we might not all of us face the same problem, and as we are left alone with our issue, we should maybe start with a scenario...

Same issue in iPhone 4, bought new via AT&T a little over a year ago. No problems until the update to iOS 5.0.1. Since then, it is the same as with the 4S: no SIM, no service, invalid SIM, etc.

Have tried reinstall, new SIM card, rebooting, airplane mode...etc. etc.. No permanent fix. Starts up again....

I haven't seen any activity for a couple days now. Just wondering if this is still an active thread or if the "No Service" issue has been resolved. It is my experience with Apple that they tell me that this is "normal" and don't worry, or don't acknowledge the problem (in this case) and hope it goes away. Problem after Problem and 3 months later, none of the problems are resolved or even acknowledged. No longer going to wait. Good bye iPhone and good bye Apple.

    Dear All,

I am in an UNIQUE situation for the "no service" or "can't sms" or " can't call or receive call". I bought the Iphone 4S from Malaysia (DIGI) ....with 5.0.1 (9A405) and it's working fine in Malaysia....

However, when I reached Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, I inserted a local sim card into the Iphone.... great... I got signal and then 3G.... working fine.... but less then 30 minutes, I start to lose signal, can't sms, no 3G data,....

Next thing I did was reset network...then the Iphone work perfectly again... for 5 minutes.... same problem arises....

I went to the local telco shop....they told me that my iphone is locked. Well, i bought from Malaysia Digi and I am sure it is not lock... cause I have been changing different telco sim card in Malaysia and it works.

Next, I swap back the Malaysia Sim Card into the Iphone,.... it works perfectly on roaming...."can receive call and sms".... but I need wifi for data... cause it is expensive to roam with data....

I am puzzled.... so it cannot be hardware or software problem.... I am lost... please advise.

I have exactly the same problem! Bought factory unlocked in Canada. Now using in Azerbaijan. It works quite well with one GSM operator. When I insert the sim card of a different operator - the **** is there. The "problematic" SIM card works well in other phones. So the problem is definitely with Apple.

Now trying to update to 406. lets see how its gonna do the job.

406 fixed me for a few weeks, then one day it started again

I'm on my 4th phone now, and have been tracking which apps I put on it, reinstalling them one by one until a crash.

Yesterday, I installed "My Fitness Pal" again, and it just started crashing.

I know that iOS apps are supposed to be sandboxed, but that doesn't always work. I suspect that some sort of command this app is sending is causing the phone to crash, then recorrect, which gets it stuck in the loop.

It's amazing... almost 3 months and no fix yet for Wi-Fi, signal drop, battery, audio and more... and people still keep buying this phone!  If I had a known of all these issues, I would NEVER buy one.  My next phone will be an Android.  Apple is rolling out the iPhone in more countries next week and continues to ship a buggy iOS/hardware - that beats me.   I am shocked that no American has not sued Apple yet.  The media is quiet too.   We need to start making noise folks!  Contact your local media, blogs etc and get these issues reported.  Let's get Apple back to the drawing board and fix this very buggy iOS... 3 months is way toooooooooooo long!!!!

Looks like the "406" update solved my problem of network, sms and calls. I hope it wont be temporary...

Hi everybody, I'm using two different SIM cards, one in Slovenia and one in Ukraine and in both cases I experienced losing signal and sim failure. The phone was bought in UK.
