Is your WiFi network up and running and do you have your iOS device set to use WiFi (i.e. not on 3G or with WiFi turned off)? Try Apple's free Remote app to see if your WiFi is working. If it does not seem to be working (I mean your WiFi) then I'd do a reset of both your WiFi basestation and Apple TV.

If after thet above checks it still isn't working I'd do a complete ("cold") restart on your iOS device. Hold the power button down until you see the message to turn the device off. Allow the device to power down (it may take several seconds for the display to turn off), wait for maybe ten seconds more and then briefly hold down the power button again until you see the display come on (you'll see an Apple logo). Now try your video/audio source again and see if it works.

Solutions that might help here....just fixed mine:

- I couldn't get the airplay icon to show at all on my iPhone 4 or new iPad. Just bought the apple tv and apple airport extreme router....

- just confirmed with support that you cannot use the airport extreme GUEST NETWORK if you want to use AirPlay. I changed my iPad , iPhone and apple tv to my primary network

- after trying everything in help and here.....REBOOTING THE ROUTER SOLVED IT. AirPlay icon showed up

good luck.

I use AppleTV to mirror my ipad 2. it's great. Love it Then I'll try it again and it may work but often the icon disappears. I then clear the password then re-enter it and that will bring it back or if that doesn't work I may have to shut down my ipad 2 at least once. This happens almost every second or third time I try to use it. As someone has said, this is the first time I've been deeply disappointed in an Apple product. I expect glitches every now and then but a constant consitant problem is a first.

It's getting more and more frustration that I must do this over and over and over.

Hope Apple fixes the problem soon. I'm thinking of upgrading my Nov2007 white macbook to a 2012 macbook air for the airplay feature but if it is gonna be a pain I'll have to try something else.

I've borrowed a friend's 2nd or 3rd gen Apple TV (new out of box) and have not been able to get AirPlay mirroring to work. I have a mid 2012 MacBook Air running mountain lion. I can see the AirPlay icon in iTunes and connect through that, but no icon shows up in the bar at the top of the screen or in the Preferences - Display menu.

So far I have tried:

- setting up the iTunes accounts for sharing

- updating to latest software on the Air and on the TV

- reconnect the TV to WiFi (Forget network and re-enter)

- rebooting the router, TV, and Air

- confirmed AirPlay through iTunes works

This covers everything on the forums I've seen with respect to "I tried this and it worked" but I still can't see the icon or option anywhere

I have checked my Macbook pro ip 192.168.7.3 address as well as Apple TV ip address 192.168.7.2, using both with same apple Itunes username and password, the icon appears on the top of screen and disaapears. I have gone to icon of computers where on click it says enable sharing, which I have done but in no way it can play on my screen which is connected with apple tv through HDMI. I have checked HDMI as it shows all the information of Apple TV. Some how can not figure out what could be the problem. I am on the same network of my wifi and all the devices are also connected to the same network with ip address as stated above. Can receive internet through same router on TV monitor through Apple TV as well as my computer

I have reset my apple tv and have configured again and agin with apple id as well as cloud with apple id. If some one could suggest where I am missing, it will be great help
