Q: Photos are split between multiple DCIM folders in Windows

Hi all,

I'm a little confused as to why this has happened, but since resorting my phone for an iOS 5 upgrade, what used to be just a single folder of photos and videos, has split into 4 and it's made it an absolute nightmare to find anything. For example:

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\823WGTMA

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\858HDJES

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\860OKMZO

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\965YOKDJ

Is there anyway to easily merge these back into just a single folder? And how would I know which of them the iPhone will save to?

I cannot cut and paste between the folders.

Thanks

Hmm, just to add to this, they all show up as separate folders on my phone too, but I cannot add them back into the camera roll:

Dont think there is anything u can do to make all the photos in the same folder. apple has done this to make it faster.

also one of the folders is now just for videos i have noticed.

U could always add them to apps like facebook and save them again to your cam roll. a long process tho.

I have a safe photo app(not the name of the app i have). that is good to move pic back to the cam roll as i can select alot of photos at a time.

you can add photo to this app by itunes. or add photos from your iphone within the app its self.

Thanks, that's a real shame to be honest... think I'm going to have to transfer /all/ of my photos off, but god ****ing **** is that ever a pain! I always look through my photos in explorer, and it just isn't practical to do this right now unfortunately

It seems so bizarre, and so fragmented - the photos I have are randomly split between 4 folders now, so I can't even just grab all of my 'Rhodes 2011' photos, or 'London 2010' or whatever - they're just randomly all over the place. FFS!

Yeah i am facing this problem too. a few others as well. it is just so sick with all those weird folders inside DCIM where you can't even rename them or delete them.

Is there really no solution for this?

By the way, this only happened when i connect to my laptop at home (windows7 32 bit). It didn't happen when i connect to my PC at work (windows XP). But if you are saying that all those weird folders also appeared on your phone then it's scary man! So far it's looks fine on my phone.

Come on apple, please do something. This is really a bug to be fixed.

This is only a problem if you don't understand how digital cameras work or are intended to be used. The DCIM folders on your computer are created by the program that you used to import the photos. They have nothing to do with the iPhone, and it will happen with every digital camera that you import photos from. DCIM folders are intended to be TEMPORARY STORAGE; you are expected to move your images to organized albums and delete the DCIM folers after you have done so. sorry for the caps.

hi lawrence. first off thanks for your help and reply. secondly i've had several digital cameras and they haven't exhibited this behavior.

the main issue we have is that this happens almost without fail when the firmware is upgraded. i am not sure why this does it but between that time, i can take 1000 pictures and the folders never split. then when our phones are upgraded, it splits in three or four folders.

    Dear all.

i think it is a matter of windows only

im facing same things and i discovered the following :

1- the folders in DCIM is deviding the pictures based on picture no.

in my case it is devided like this:

img_199 till img_999 for folder MZO

IMg_1006 till IMg_1999 for folder GTMA

    and so on

i think pictures between 1001 and 1005 deleted by me one day.

    anybody have same situation ?

My Nikon D5000 DSLR does exactly the same thing. I suspect it is because access to folders slows down the more files you have in the folder, so splitting them makes sense.

But what difference does it make? You should never have over 1000 photos on your phone in the Camera Roll. You should transfer them to your computer frequently, then add just the ones you want to keep on the phone to albums in the Photo app. If you leave them on the phone and don't back up regularly eventually something will happen and you will lose them. If you do back up regularly 1000 photos will take forever to back up and take huge amounts of storage on your computer in the backup.
