Using headphones, sms alert not audible, but music still fades.

When I plug in my car radio (via aux in), the Iphone sees it as headphones. So far so good. But when I get a text message, the music fades, but the alert isn't audible. (via my car speakers, so the headphones) Is there a setting for this?
