Weird delays opening files related to Mobile Documents folder

This is a very weird situation. With iCloud enabled, I get a weird delay when opening files.

What happens:

I open basically any sort of file (word, pages, zip file, etc).

  • I will get the spinning beachball for 5-10 seconds and cannot interact with the program in any way.
  • The following appears in the System Log:

10/23/11 8:39:41.312 PM librariand: changing log level to 5

10/23/11 8:39:41.526 PM librariand: collection does not match configured AppleID (username@mac.com), removing existing collection

10/23/11 8:39:53.114 PM librariand: items added to file://localhost/Users/username/Library/Mobile%20Documents/ mobile documents not enabled (1)

10/23/11 8:39:53.114 PM librariand: looks like mobile documents are really disabled

In addition, each time this happens it seems to create an additional "Mobile Documents" folder in ~/Library/, see below:

This issue occurs whether or not I have "Documents & Data" selected for sync in iCloud preferences.

Interestingly enough, if I immediately open another file after this occurs, the issue does not happen again right away. However, if I wait about two minutes and open one, it does occur every time.

(Note: My acount name and email address have been replaced with "username" but the log is otherwise unaltered)

Same issue here.

Delay seems to happen with Apple apps (iWork apps and Quicktime Player)

However, I do not have multiple "Mobile Documents" folders, just one.

I tried deleting it (while Document syncing was off) in order to have it recreated auomatically. It was, but the issue persisted.

I have at the moment disabled iCloud document syncing on the Mac (and have yet to find out a single feature it currently has, except these weird delays ...)

and this solves it for me.

I have the exact same problem. It's been driving me crazy ever since I "upgraded" to Lion. I finally traced it to iCloud and the Mobile Documents folder using Console, which lead me here.

Any time I launch Pages, QuickTime, or TextEdit (TextEdit, really?), the first file I try to open gives me the spinning beachball of death for about 10 seconds before I can do anything.

I did numerous searches regarding the spinning beach ball of death in relation to those apps and found nothing germaine before I specifically searched for "collection does not match configured AppleID." This makes me think that a lot of other people are having this problem who just haven't discovered this thread.

I will try disabling "Documents & Data" but an actual fix would be greatly appreciated. "It just works" has not applied to many aspects of iCloud. I thought MobileMe had its issues, but iCloud is a mess in my personal experience, well beyond this issue. I appreciate the potential and am clinging to some faith in Apple, but Lion and iCloud have been REALLY testing my patience. Snow Leopard was a rock. This all seems like beta software hastily ported from iOS.

I disabled "Documents & Data" in the iCloud preferences. Opening files in those apps no longer causes that terrible delay, but now I'll have to go back to saving documents to my MobileMe iDisk if I want to open them on my iPhone (a feature that they plan on eliminating in a few months, unfortunately).

Also, I tried re-enabling Documents & Data. It causes this message in the console, and then the problem returns:

1/31/12 9:39:19.451 PM [0x0-0x2c02c].com.apple.systempreferences: Enabling MobileDocuments...

1/31/12 9:39:28.561 PM librariand: client connection is invalid: Connection invalid

My Apple ID ends in mac.com, not me.com. Is there any possibility that this is related to the problem? Usually the two addresses are interchangeable, and iCloud is supposed to work with both.

I had a feeling. The mac.com address is my primary address and official Apple ID though, including my iTunes account. I would rather not use mac.com in some cases and me.com in others. It should be an easy fix for them, since an Apple ID can already be any email address, as far as I know.

I'm probably just going to leave it off for now, but good to know.

Yes, the mac.com is also my official Apple ID (way back from the free iTools time), but it's interchangeable with the me.com extension. You can use either without any harm. I mostly still use the mac.com extension (iPad, iPod, iTunes), but using me.com instead also works. It's no problem. I logged in iCloud on Lion with me.com, use mac.com with iTunes, and use mac.com on iCloud on my iPad. No problem.

I think it's simply a bug in Lion that the mac.com extension is not recognized for the iCloud authentication. I will file a bug report later.

In the Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences, you have to remove the mac.com iCloud account in order to add a me.com account. I realize they're the same thing. I just didn't want to mess with resyncing anything. (I've developed a strong fear of duplicate events in iCal, for example, given some recent experiences.) If it doesn't cause any problems though, that's great. Thanks T-Man.

The syncing problem. I actually didn't give it much thought, at first. I just removed the iCloud account, thinking the data is already in the Cloud. It will remove your Mail account, so you have to redownload all your mail. I kept my Address Book on my Mac, then I started to realize it could lead to sync problems. I've had some duplicates problem in the past too.

Best is to make a backup of your Mail, iCal and Address book first. That's easily done, just in case. And if you turn off iCloud (Mail, iCal, Address Book, also Safari) make sure everything in the Cloud is up to date before you remove the iCloud account from your Mac. Then when you turn it on again with the me.com extension, everything should download from the Cloud to your Mac again. And if you by any chance you have duplicates in iCal or Address Book, you can just work from your backup (erase the Cloud, and import your backup).

I had the multiple Mobile Documents.delete folders also, so I disabled Documents & Data on my mac and all devices since I don't use it, and deleted all the Mobile Documents folders. On restart the original folder is recreated. I did turn on Douments & Data later in my setup, not initially.

I just wanted to tell you guys that I am not using a mac.com or a me.com login, but am using a non apple email address.
