iPhoto 11 crashes/quits

iPhoto 9.1.5 has suddenly begun to crash/shut down (no message, just disappears from screen) when I try to import photos from any source. Tried to use a new library, but that doesn't help. I am running Snow Leopard v 10.6.8. Tried to fix permissions, but that didn't help either. I don't have the 3ivx app, so those solutions don't work for me. When I relaunch iPhoto holding down the option key, it makes a new library, but still crashes when I try to import. I've upgraded to iPhoto 9.2, and still the same problem. Can anyone help? I don't have an iPhoto crash report log in the crashreporter folder. Thanks. Mac Pro tower 2.66 GHz Dual Core.

Thanks. Good info.

Made a new account, logged in, iPhoto opened ok, then when I tried to import photos from my iPhone 4, same sudden crash occurred.

So, looks like a re-install of the iPhoto app is in order, per your suggestion. Ok, I'm making progress. Now, what's the best way to do this so that any and all offending prefs files, and other connected iphot files, etc are removed? Is there an 'uninstall' utility for iPhoto? Also, now that iPhoto is loaded via the App store, how can I get another copy downloaded?

And I don't want to lose my library of 30,000 photos.

Thanks, TD. You seem to be providing great advice to people. We appreciate your help.

Well back up your Library first. You should always have an up-to-date backup

To re-install iPhoto

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)

2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type

/var/db/receipts/

2c: on 10.7 they're at

/private/var/db/receipts

A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.

3. Re-install.

If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.

If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.

If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

Thanks. I will do that ASAP.

However, something else strange is happening that may be related, and perhaps this will give more insight. When I opened iMovie v 9.04 tonight, it opens up, then immediately crashes in the same manner as iPhoto, before I could even do anything. Could there be something else going on here that is causing these iLife apps to crash?

TD,

Trashed the iPhoto app, found and trashed all the iPhoto.pkg files, re-installed iPhoto 9.2. It opened successfully, but when I tried to import one photo from my iPhone 4, it crashed again, same as before.

Something else is going on here. It shouldn't matter, but FYI, my photo library is on a different HD than the iPhoto app. Same for iMovie.

Also, except for the 'import' function, iPhoto seems to perform normally, and doesn't crash when I view and edit pics.

I'm having the same problems...iphoto and idvd continually freeze up or crash while I'm working in them. I have Snow Leopard. My Mac is older. Processor is 2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory is 1 GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM. I've tried reinstalling Snow Leopard, iLife11 and still have the same problem. Anyone know if this could be a memory issue? Or any other suggestions. I've verified and repaired permissions, tried creating a new profile and removed as many photos, etc as possible but nothing has worked so far.
