Apple TV 2 will not restore, error code 9

My Apple TV 2, which has worked flawlessly for over a year, started acting funny tonight. None of the interent functions showed up and it could not connect to the home sharing network or stream any media. I unplugged it and it would not come back on - it just sat with the power light blinking once every second, and nothing displaying on the screen.

I unhooked it and plugged it into my PC, and it showed up immediately in iTunes (10.5.0.142). I clicked the 'Restore' button. It downloaded the latest firmware and began the update process. The restore failed with error 9 at the "Verifying Apple TV restore with Apple" step, which Apple Support lists as a "USB" error. So far I have tried the restore on 3 different computers (one Mac with Lion and 2 PC's running Windows 7) with a variety of Micro-USB cables and ports on each PC. Every attempt returns the exact same error at the exact same point. I have also tried the restore with the power plugged in and with an older version of iTunes. My firewall is off on the computers. Overall I've tried the restore with over 30 combinations of Computers, ports, cables and software versions with no luck. I have included the log below. It's the same every time.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Is Apple by any chance having some service problems today? I am wonding this becasue I can't activate my old original iPhone to use as an iPod Touch tonight either, and I have been able to do that at least twice in the past. I've tried all day long with both of these issues to no avail.

Also, the firmware I was trying to update to is AppleTV2,1_4.4.1_9A335a_Restore.ipsw - this is what iTunes downloaded for the restore.

I finally got through to Apple support. I called since the restore method seemed to be working for most poeple in the forums. The support rep told me that this error is definately due to the server problems they are having and I will very likely not be able to restore the AppleTV via the USB method until they are fixed. He said they are system wide, and affecting iPhone activations/restores as well.

4.4.2 just come out. I'm downloading it right now. Hopefully it will fix the error 9 issue.

I already tried the 4.4.2 update on both a Mac and a PC with multiple cables, and have the same issue still. It doesn't look like their fix actually fixed anything, at least for me.

If you get it to work please post back. I'd be interested to know if it works for you or not.

Yes I recalled trying to help, but had obviously recalled some of the details incorrectly, I had the impression you were trying to update from 4.3 to 4.4 when the issue occured, obviously not, but I've got it now, you were trying to reset after updating to 4.4.

Exactly. I was on 4.4. I unplugged the Apple TV 2 and when I turned it back on, I was getting a reset loop. When I tried to restore in itunes I started getting the error 9.
