Why is Mail application canceling shutdown and restart?

My Mail application is canceling shutdown and restart. The "quit button" turns grey at the same time and I have to force shotdown of Mail. After this I can continue with shutdown/restart of the computer with no problem. Does anyone know what the problem is?? I'm running a couple of IMAP accounts.
