Ok, so my Ipod touch is broke( it keeps freezing and getting the white screen of death) but i can still use it. I want to know how to update it to the new is05 software. I plugged it into itunes and click 'check for updates' and it's saying it's up to date but it's the software version: 4.2.1. Can anyone help?

Jessica, you need to have the iPod repaired before it will update to iOS 5.
yes is up to date you can only do it if its the 3rd generation and you can gotto apple.com and look for ios 5 download if yours is 3 or higher.
As Jessen is saying i aluding too, I think you really have a 2G iPod since those can only go to iOS 4.2.1. If yours is an 8 or 16 GB one without a camera it isa 2G, Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. A 32 GBcan be either. To identify yours:

Regarding your problem, I would try the standard fixes:
- Reset, nothing will be lost.
- Restore from backup
'- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still a problem then you likey have a hardwarware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. It is free.
