Error Message "waiting for response from user"

When some people invite me to chat on Ichat, they get an error message saying "waiting for response from user." On my end, I never get the invite. Other people are able to invite me without any problem. How do I fix this? Is the problem on my end?

Thank you!

Hi,

This is most likely to do with the way your Modem or Router does NAT.

NAT = Network Address Translation and is about as standardised as the word fuel is for Cars.

There is not much you can do when you a d Buddies device "Don't Play Nicely"

If you are not doing it already use UPnP to open the ports.

A little more background-

I'm with a university Writing Center and we use Ichat to conduct apppointments. At the time of the appointment, the students are supposed to contact us at our .me account. About half are successful. Because I work at a school with a secure network, I am unable to change ports or mess with network settings. Any other ways around this problem? Students get messages like, "can't connect, user offline," or "waiting for authorization," or "there was an error with jabber, ichat couldn't send message to user." So frustrating!

Thanks!

Hi,

IS this run though OS X Server's iChat Server ?

Or are you running another Jabber Server ?

Any Jabber server using a SSL Login will use port 5223

Non SSL Login use port 5222

Server to Server Federation (the thing that lets you add Buddies from Other servers is on port 5269

See This Apple Doc

"Waiting for Authorisation"

This happens in iChat because when you Add a Jabber Buddy, this Request for Authorisation is sent once.

It Needs the Buddy to Accept or Decline the Invite to be a Buddy.
Other Jabber apps resend the Request for Authorisation until the Buddy actually sees the request and does something with it.

The only thing to do in iChat is to delete the Buddy and re-add them when you know they are going to be able to respond.

The other messages look a little like a DNS issue with the Writing Center's Internet/Server connection.

If this is about iCHat Server then you may need to post in OS X Server Forums.

Ralph,

I've been testing this back and forth from my personal jabber account (in Ichat) to the writing center .me account (in Ichat). I know that both are online at the same time.

When I try sending invite to text chat from jabber to .me, I get "there was an error with jabber unable to send" message. Then the .me buddy shows us as waiting for authorization. I never get this authorization request on the .me account in Ichat. I know you say it sends only once, but I don't get it at all. I don't see where I can authorize the buddy. When I delete the buddy on the jabber and try again- I still don't get it. The buddy never pops up on the .me, so no way to select and authorize.

When I do the reverse and trysending invite to text from .me to jabber, it sends the message without error, but I never see it pop up on jabber. The jabber buddy appears in my buddy list as offline. I thought, well maybe I could highlight the buddy name and select "reuqest authorization" uner the buddy menu. But, "request for authorization" in the Buddies menu is greyed out.

What to do???

Hi,

I can see now where the issue is.

A Jabber Buddy list can only accept Jabber Buddies.

A Buddy List that Logs into AIM such as your @Me.com name can only add Valid AIM Names to it as Buddies.

The main problem is that both Jabber IDs and AIM names can have the @symbol on them and look like email addresses.

Example Jabber IDs
Example "AIM " Names
user@Gmail.com ralphjonhsr (No @)
user@jabber.au.com user@me.com (Apple ID type)
user@yourJabberServer.com username@mac.com (Apple ID type)
any Facebook name username@anyISP.com (Email registered with AIM)

So your Jabber Buddy List will find that there is No (@)me.com Jabber server and say the message cannot be delivered.

The AIM (@Me.com) Buddy never gets the Request for Authorisation for the same reason and the auto response of adding An ID/Name to Send a Message to starts iChat wanting that person to Accept or Decline being a Buddy- which they cannot do - so you get the name with the "Waiting for..." message.

Either everyone gets a Jabber ID or everyone gets a Valid AIM Name.
