Iphone 4s Takes Pictures Upside-Down???

My iphone 4s takes pictures upside down even if I hold the phone upright (home screen on the bottom). Is it just a glitch in the phone or can I do something to fix it??

Has anyone else had this issue??

iPhone 4, iOS 5

I'm pretty sure that is just one of trillions of glitches, as my own **** experience With faulty Apple equipment continues... if you try to get hep you'll be left very dissatisfied and frustrated and maybe 1-2 hours on hold at the help desk.

Ohhhh, maybe that's why they have these forums, so those that are denied support have a hope to get help here. I'm thinking you're never going to get anything but a headache. :( Apple doesn't care, why do they call it 'Apple Care?'

Mfarqwa, my only comment would be to please get a job with Apple so you can implement this fix because it's clear to me that nobody on staff there now is concerned about fixing it. Not only aren't they concerned about it they won't even publicly acknowledge it's an issue. It also amazes me that there are so many people out there that still don't have a clue about this. I ran in to a buddy of mine over the weekend I hadn't seen in a while and he was bragging about his new 4S. I told him I'd like mine better if it didn't take upsidedown pictures. He said what are you talking about. It's a great camera and one of the reasons he bought the phone. I happened to have my laptop with me so I told him to take a pic holding the phone with the buttons up as advertised and also a pic holding the phone verticle and send them both to me in an email. When I received and opened the email in front of him the expression on his face was priceless. As you'd expect one of the pics was upsidedown and the other was sideways. He had no idea. So.... like me he's now taking all of his pics with the phone held upsidedown and horizontal. Sigh............

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but I have to say, Apple got this wrong. The programming of this camera "should" have set the EXIF to indicate the picture was upright when taken with the phone oriented (not to be confused with oriental...) with the volume buttons on the top and to the right (which was even advertised by Apple, while promoting the 4s, to be used as the shutter button the same way you use a normal camera!!!) As with my DSLR, if I take a picture with the camera in the normal upright position, my pictures come out, well, normal and upright! The EXIF attribute was originally designed for portrait correction (because some people take portrait pictures with the camera rotated left 90 degrees, and others rotate 90 degrees to the right). I'll tell you what, if my DSLR tagged the EXIF attribute, on all of my upright photos, as upside down...I'd be replacing my DSLR. By the way, if your car has only 1 gear while it's in drive, with a top speed of of about 10mph, but has 6 gears and a top speed of 146mph when it's is reverse...the WORKAROUND would be to drive around backwards all day, however this does not fix the problem.

I transferred my photos taken with my 4S to my Windows 7 PC. Some came out upside down, some were right side up. But when I went to rotate the photos on my PC they won't save, I get an error message that there's something wrong with the file properties! What is going on Apple?!

I would be okay with my pictures coming out the wrong way if I was allowed to fix them. My photos are pretty much useless. I don't care about the whats or the whys, or the bells and whistles, this new camera is supposed to have. I want my pictures to come out the way they are shot, the way I see them on the screen. And I don't want to have the hassle of messing with third party software just to share a photo or two or twenty. This seems like a pretty glaring design flaw, and I have seen this mentioned elsewhere, but when my friends ask about my phone, I tell them if they care about camera function (which probably most everyone does, right? one of the main draws for me with the iPhone 4S) that they should not invest in Apple. Because that's what is. A 600$ piece of equipment and it can't even take a picture the right way. Until this is fixed, or ****, even ADDRESSED, my advice is to save your money.

Yeah, just got myself the 4S last week and discovered this Bug. I should note that I switched from an Android device and no matter what orientation you held the phone in, the pictures always came out right side up no matter what you viewed the images with. Even when viewing Android pictures on the iPhone, the pictures always display correctly. Basically, because of this bug, every picture or video you take has to be in Landscape (with Home button to the Right) which also means that on the iPhone there's no such thing as Portrait.

Yeah I too am facing the same problem of inverted photos when mailed or transfered to the pc. i suppose that this problem is occuring due to photo stream option in icloud. The bug in photo stream application is causing the same i suspect.

Just for once put photo stream off in your phone and then take photos and videos and try syncing them with the pc and it should work alright.

i also noticed that the videos taken with photo stream on appear inverted if played on a media player but only if they are played on quick time then sum times they appear normal but i myself am not much a fan of quick time that much.

But i consider putting photo stream off is like cutting the icloud feature and always hav to transfer photo through cable quite headache . apple should come out with this bug fix in photo stream

atleast i can point out that cause it was the case on my iphone 4s.

I would like to know whether this is true for all iphones .

juss put photo stream off from icloud and check if what i am suspecting is true or not.

also i found that few photos transfered using when photo stream is on gives error saying problem with the file properties because of which the photos are not able to be rectified to a proper orientation.

yeah, it's not because of iCloud. it's because the iPhone sets the Orientation flag in the exif header of the image as mfarqwa has posted..

Ummm... I didn't quite say it that way 😉.

I said the phone when held as advertised is in it's upside down position. Apple use 'exif' to correct this. I mentioned the exif data of 180 to show that indeed the photo is being taken upside down.

The reason for upside down pictures and video is because not everyone conforms to exif and THERE IS NO EXIF FOR VIDEO.

So... yes icloud has nothing to do with it. It's because when first designed the cameras 'upright' position was made with the volume buttons in the lower left. NOW they want you to hold it 'flipped' around (ie volume buttons top right) so now the camera is upside down.

i know you didn't say it exactly like that. just trying to sum it up.

basically, though, an iPhone picture has the orientation set in the exif header.

an android picture doesn't.

this can be fixed/modified/changed with a software update, it doesn't matter how the camera lens is physically mounted in the phone itself.

and i didn't look at the video file, so i don't know what kind of header it has but it is indeed upside down as well.

but again, that also could be changed with a software update.

Wow, looks like this has been going on since the 4s came out. I got it on day one and just figured Apple would put out a fix.

It's become so annoying that I'm now seeking fixes but it turns out Apple has turned a blind eye to this one. I guess we are all just "holding it wrong".

I have had an iphone since the Edge model came out and I was always impressed that the frequent updates used to fix things. Updates (Circa 2011-12) are few and far between anymore...Siri and this apparent upside down photo issue show that the machine just does not work as efficiently without Jobs at the helm.
