Q: Iphone 4s Takes Pictures Upside-Down???

My iphone 4s takes pictures upside down even if I hold the phone upright (home screen on the bottom). Is it just a glitch in the phone or can I do something to fix it??

Has anyone else had this issue??

iPhone 4, iOS 5

    Gigi1129--

You can email a picture "not upside down". Take it in landscape with volume buttons down (not on the top). Either press the volume bottom with your left thumb or use the virtual screen shutter button with your right hand. Perhaps Apple will provide an option (a s/w enhancement) that will allow for backward compatibility in this area.

It doesn't help to rant and scream, throwing out emotional barbs. It would help to actually describe the facts as to why it is a problem for you even if you're using OS 10.6.x versions. My family members are on 10.6 and 10.7 versions and don't have a problem with any of my iPhone pictures. Neither do I.  Are you up to date with all the S/W releases?

So the answer is become a selling photographer and buy the latest and greatest of everything Apple has to offer then.  Thanks but no thanks.  Great answer for apple though I'm sure.

I think at this point you, jlbmacuser, should just shut up and stop annoying other people with your crappy explanations.

@jlbmacuser. I, too, am if this age group and you are dead wrong. I too have an expensive Canon camera. NEVER AND I DO SAY NEVER has my Canon camera turned my pictures upside down no matter what software I use. If this is the case then while advertising this expensive toy it should be stated NOT FOR WINDOWS USERS. I had actually planned on getting a Mac laptop because I heard you had less problems with viruses but NO WAY now. I will just go to another smart phone that has the sense to make things so you can use them no matter what the software is. ALL I AM SAYING IS IF THIS IS THE WAY IT IS GOING TO BE, THEY SHOULD HAVE TO DISCLOSE THIS INFORMATION.

Gents, no need to bicker.  I'm annoyed myself, I would profusely email pictures and right about the 5.1 update or slightly before, the pictures started appearing upside down when emailed.  This, along with a dozen other anomalies will be addressed on next update -- as is the case with normal imporvement of software over time (with an occasional glitch along the way).

In this case, it is not Apple or the iPhone's problem, it is non-conforming application software.

So please name all the application softwares that conform to the EXIF for video standard.

The iPhone works correctly from this point of view, as do the semi and professional level high-end cameras that are EXIF conforming.

    EXIF doesn't work for video...

    • Some digital cameras can also capture video. The Exif standard has no provision for video files.

(taken from Section 5. Problems, via wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif#Problems)

and the Spec doesn't mention video (http://www.cipa.jp/english/hyoujunka/kikaku/pdf/DC-008-2010_E.pdf)

Why can't people acknowledge this fact?

There are no exif standards for video see above post.

Until these applications catch up, if I'm planning on sending a photo to people I know on Windows platforms, or my mother-in-law who has a 7 year old iMac, I make sure I do one of two things:

    <snip>

I've mentioned this already, but what you offer is a fix after the fact, AFTER you've come across this thread (or worked it out for yourself).

I am proposing a universal fix by Apple for ALL the iphone users who are not aware that they are now taking pictures updside when holding the camera as advertised by Apple.

I have proved this point by providing the EXIF evidence that the software is telling the EXIF readers to rotate all pictures 180 degrees. This means it's upside down. And all videos are upside down as EXIF doesn't work on video.

I would love to have been Naptownzballa user that opened this up for original discussion.  In the old days this would have made some software developer like myself money.  They would have sat down and looked at the expectation and mapped that to a gap and created a project to make the expectation a reality.  In this case however helping the users through this is not in Apple's best interest.

Interesting thing about this is that when you look up towards the sky and see blue that is "up".  as you let gravity pull your chin down and you see green grass that is "down".  The makers of the iPad magicly made a display that sorts all that out and shows you a screen that is in proper perspective to my current up and down.  The camera software on the other hand over time has been broken and has lost it's way.  It no longer knows what up is... so my question to Apple is WHAT IS UP?

I did not have any problem on my Macs, nor did my Mac friends.

Try this little experiment and get back to us:

Take a photo with your iphone as advertised (volume button top right). Download that photo to your computer. Open up Safari. Drag the photo into safari. What do you see?

    Let us know.

Gary127,  Don't hold your breath waiting for Apple to answer your question.  After all this discussion and no acknowledgement of any kind from them on the issue it's clear to me they don't give a rat's you know what about this.

My understanding of this issue grew after being introduced to this thread, so I researched the EXIF standards and experimented with my expensive Canon cameras. That's when I found out they do the same thing the iPhone does with regard to EXIF orientation data.

Yes but your Canon cameras do not have the internal camera upside down in its upright position before any pics are even taken.

Apple has an untenable problem here in order to conform to EXIF standards

Again, they can conform all they want but there is no EXIF Standards for video as mentioned by me numerous times.

    jlbmacuser wrote:

Eventually the photo s/w we all use will catch up.

Yeah and maybe the EXIF Standard itself will catch up to Apple and be used for video...

Personally I think it was just an oversight by Apple not realising that if exif doesn't work then everything is now taken upside down and not realising that exif doesn't work for video.

If I'm wrong, then Apple did know and made their own exif for video (as mac users apparently don't have this problem even for video) and made it across all their software to work and said stuff the others??

I do think it will be fixed. If not by an upcoming software update, then by the next iphone release. Fingers crossed it's ASAP.

You're missing the point. Apple advertise it the opposite way, therefore the millions of users who have not read this thread will be taking them upside down

Like they got in trouble recently here in Australia for advertising the 4G in the new ipad 3 when we can't use it here in Australia (http://www.padgadget.com/2012/03/27/new-ipad-apple-in-trouble-for-advertising-4g -speeds-outside-north-america/)

Maybe I should complain to the ACCC about the camera being upside down when used as advertised...
