Maximum DVD size?

Just learning with this product so please bear with me.

This was just an experiment not with production media so no worries if it baulks! Anyway - I was tying to see if DVD Studio would compress 4 hrs of video onto one SL-DVD.

The projected was created/encoded successfully - estimated size 10.2gb. I was hoping the build process would shrink the DVD to 4.3gb but this never happened despite me setting the project as single layer.

Does DVD SPro compress in this instance or have I got it wrong!?

You would have to encode below 2.25 mbps with 192 AC3 audio to fit that on a single layer.

What were your settings in Compressor?

DVDSP isn't going to figure it out for you.

Google "Bit Rate Calculator." It will let you plug in time vs. settings and figure out what settings you need to use to get your material to fit.

As mark and David have said, DVDSP is not going to calculate the encode rate for you... it works from the basis that you know what settings to use and it applies the ones you give it in the application's preferences.

You really should follow the references to bit budgets... to know how much to compress the material will depend on a combination of factors.

I would suggest that you also consider using an encoder which can work at half D1, or encode to MPEG1 if you need to fit this material on a single layer DVD-R...
