After starting my iphone 4s the spotlight search works for a few seconds, and then nothing.Why , i dont understand it

I am experiencing the same problem. Still have a 3g iphone and has only started since latest upgrade. Hoping that someone out there can help??
Since updating to ios 5 i cannot use spotlight search any more... I used to be able to type in the first few letters of a contacts name and the response was immediate. Now my iphone pauses then gives me a blank white screen.
I have all the spotlight boxes checked for searching using >General>Spotlight search...
When I go into >contacts> and type the contacts name in sptlight either no response or a blank white screen..
I am using ios 5 with the up to date firmware, I have also restored my iphone using itunes but no difference.
I have a 3GS 16gb with 10gb of disc space free....
Any one got any similar experiences or can help please...?

Turn off 'Mail' in settings > Just a work around ....but works.. submit feedback to apple here... http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
