the iphone iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (1).

I have an iPhone 3GS, I have been using iOS5 since it came out, yesterday my phone stopped getting service and a blue bubble appeared with something like "iPhone cannot make or recieve calls. Restore from iTunes. www.apple.com.au/support"

So I turned off and on my phone, and it loaded back up with a silver screen then when unlocked displayed the cord to itunes symbol, but whenever I connected it to my computer it would just reset itself over and over so it couldnt restore.

I let it die overnight and charged it up this morning, it was working fine again.

About 2 hours ago the same message appeared however this time I decided to attempt restoring straight away.

iTunes deleted all the software off my phone and then upon trying to reinstall it came up with the above message

the iphone iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (1).

I have tried multiple times and it happens everytime. How do I fix it?

Now all my phone does is turn on to the cord to itunes picture. thats its only function

Thank you for your help

Try putting your phone I to DFU mode

DFU means Device Firmware Update. If a restore using Recovery Mode doesn't work you will want to use DFU Mode as a last resort. When placing your iPhone into DFU Mode it does not load the OS before attempting the restore, check the link below for how to do this

Hmmm I've got a similar issue with the same error message....

I've tried to install OS5 on my 32mb 3gs and encountered the message "the iphone iphone could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (1)." The iphone display the need to connect to itunes.

I've followed the DFU as specified by iclarified but unfortunately get the same error message again...

Any other suggestions?

I've not long sold an iPhone 4 buy before selling the girl I sold it to wanted it updating to ios5.

I said yeah no problem I can do that for you. I downloaded and installed the new version of iTunes and went to restore and update the phone, I kept getting the message you're all talking about must be some faults or bugs with the new version of iTunes or something. It took me all day getting the same message. It was something along the lines of what you are all seeing (this iPhone could not be restored because am unknown error occurred). I plugged the phone into my laptop held the home and sleep button and released the sleep button keeping hold of the home button when the apple logo came up on the phone. Putting the phone into DFU mode. This seemed to work in the end. Keep trying, I can't believe apple just told you to buy a new one Migit. The cheek!

I decided to try restore again, it worked this time

(have no idea what changed - minus I bought a new phone 😝)

However, once restored it was putting the apps back on and reset itself now it loads my backround on the lock screen but if I unlock it, it says connect to itunes, but if I do that it just resets.
