I used to share my photos via my Mobileme gallery.
Now that I have ICloud, I have photostream, but this doesn't seem to include the ability to go to a public computer, sign in and view the photos which I have put on my photo stream. Yes I can see them on my various devices, but not on a computer other than my own.
Is this right?

That's correct. That function of MobileMe is lost in iCloud.

You can publish photos to facebook, or flikr with a plugin (here), or drag and drop to Google+ or upload manually to any number of other online photo sharing sites.
Thanks very much. Is IWeb another good way to share photos and movies? I have just tried publishing some photos and movies via this and it seemed to work well.
iWeb is perfectly good enough.
You don't mention where you are publishing to, so please note that if you are still using MobileMe to publish from iWeb, that functionality will disappear in June 2012 when MobileMe closes down, and you'll have to switch to alternative hosting.
