From the title, that pretty much says your main battery is shot. Getting three years from a PowerBook battery is about average, less if you don't use the computer on battery power regularly. Lack of use has killed more batteries than actual use.
As Allen notes, it sounds like your battery has tanked. Of course, first thing to look at is how many of the green LEDs come on with you push the test button. Second thing to look at is what System Profiler utility says when you click on the Power tab under Hardware. Here is what a very fresh battery will report, for instance, on a 1 GHz TiBook:
