Error code 1654

I'm trying to upgrade my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5, but obtain error code 1654 unable to restore the iPhone. What does that mean, what do I do?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.3.3

Hi, not sure what causes it but if you

do a full back up in itunes (right-click on your device in the sidebar and choose backup) and then
choose "restore" rather than "update" in itunes you'll get the option to
restore your device from your backup.

It takes way longer, of course, but it works.

I found a very simple fix, which has worked for me and others:

* Disable sync over Wi-Fi, then attempt the upgrade again.
