Q: Cant publish page to other domain

Hi!

My domain name is www.madsmeskalin.com. I made a site in iWeb, and wanted to publish it. All settings are okay I think, and the test connection button works fine. Here are my FTP server settings:

Site Name: test

Server Adress: www.madsmeskalin.com

User name: madsmesk

Password: ***********

Directory/path:

Protocol: FTP

Port: 21

Website URL: http://www.madsmeskalin.com

When I hit the test connection button, everything checks out fine, and when I publish the page, iWeb tells me everything is well and I can visit my page. When I visit the page I just get this error:

Not Found

The requested URL /test was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I have another page written in Text Editor at the same domain. Does this have anything to do with it? Or are there other settings I should change?

Hope you can enlighten me a little bit,

best wishes,

Mads

iWeb only tests if it can WRITE to the server.

It does not mean it is the RIGHT location.

    Check the path name.

And this is not correct :

    <html <html xmlns="http://www.w3.o ... etcetera...">

You already have a site at this address but its not an iWeb created one.

In the FTP settings this is not correct

    Server Adress: www.madsmeskalin.com

    It should be

Server Adress:     ftp.madsmeskalin.com   or the account IP address.

    It should be

Server Adress:     ftp.madsmeskalin.com   or the account IP address.

    Should it? On whose orders?

    It's perfectly valid :

I also managed to connect to cyberduck using www.madsmeskalin.com as server adress. However, it does write a ftp adress for it.

Anyway, I tried with both www.madsmeskalin.com, ftp.madsmeskalin.com and the IP adress. It doesnt work.

I deleted the previous site, just removed all the html using cyberduck. Do I need to create an iWeb page there before I publish my site?

I also tried everything in this post:

    http://www.greengeeks.com/kb/idx.php/0/109/article/How-to-publish-websites-creat ed-with-iWeb.html

    Any ideas?

No.  Publish your site from iWeb to a local folder and it will be published on your desktop.  If you have already used Cyberduck to remove the old html files from your site, then use Cyberduck, but this time to upload your new iWeb site.

That did the trick! Thank you so much!

Do I have to do this everytime I want to update my site, or is there other ways I can update directly from iWeb?

If you want to continue using Cyberduck and if that method works, then yes, you'll have to do it every time that you update your site.

    Thank you so much!

One last question. I outputted the resolution to 1280 x 720. How can I make it automatically scale with the browser I use (so I dont get those black bars at one the sides)

Browser width is user adjustable. iWeb sets the viewport width equal to the page width that you selected in the iWeb Page inspector.

To make your site more compatible use a page width of 980px.

Portable devices like iPhone/iPad have a fixed browser width but each device has two of those since it can be used in portrait and landscape mode. Therefore the viewport would, more sensibly, be set to equal the device width.

To have your webpage fit any device and any browser width chosen by the end user, you need to use a liquid layout which iWeb, and other template based editors, can't do.

    Example...

For goodness sakes!  This post is 5 years old, so why respond to a 5 year old post?

If you want help at this stage then start your own new thread.

Also, if you had bothered to read the replies in the thread, you would have seen that the answer was to use Cyberduck to upload your site and not iWeb ftp - iWeb is an unsupported product and has been so for at least the past 4 years now and has not been updated for the last 6, so it is not surprising that the inbuilt iWeb ftp will not work properly.

If you want to upload, then try using Cyberduck instead, or better still, recreate your site, but this time using software that is actually supported actively - iWeb is not that product, so move on.
