My iPhone won't show up as a device anymore in iPhone 9.2?

I do not wish to use PhotoStream to transfer photos from my iPhone 4 to my MacBook Pro. I wish to connect the iPhone via USB cable and then import the photos into iPhoto myself but since iOS 5 I have not been able to recognise my iPhone 4 as a device when I open up iPhoto.

Can anybody explain why this might be the case and/or help me get iPhoto to recognise the device again?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
