May 3, 2012 5:33 AM in response to paranodeby Mattlaw,Did you lose app data?
I'm still confused as to how the app backup works. I thought that once a phone was wiped, app data was lost (unless it was restored from a backup).
Though I had a backup mess up a week ago and several of my most recently-downloaded apps were not included when I restored from backup. I moved one of the manually from itunes, however, and the data was still there.

May 3, 2012 6:11 AM in response to Mattlawby paranode,What I did was restore from iTunes and then go to General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings. My best guess is that some setting(s) that carried over from a previous iPhone were causing problems with the new one.
All your app data, contacts, etc will still be there though.

May 3, 2012 2:22 PM in response to randroidby ajoiner490,Well, my luck came to an end :(. Mine dropped data connection about 20 minutes ago. It went a long while with no drops with the location settings trick. Apple REALLY needs to address this

May 3, 2012 2:25 PM in response to ajoiner490by randroid,That stinks. I'm still going strong with no reset. Everytime I've had a momentary pause, Safari has still been able to bring up test websites just fine.

May 3, 2012 4:41 PM in response to randroidby RapterClaw, randroid, turn your location services back on and see if the data losses reappear. I am on day two of successful loc services fix; however my issues are more intermittent than others in this post. I sometimes go several days between the data losses. Days when it happens, it seems to be bad for hours though.

May 3, 2012 5:32 PM in response to RapterClawby randroid,I probably should turn it back on for science... but i'm enjoying actual data after I leave the house so much!
I'll let you know.

May 7, 2012 12:03 PM in response to tperoby tpero,Anyone try the new 5.1.1 update? I'm still on 5.0.1 since it sounded like 5.1 made it worse, so nervous to try myself...

May 7, 2012 12:14 PM in response to tperoby MartinWisc,I haven't downloaded it yet so I can't say but I am on 2 weeks with a new sim card and zero problems. I'm convinced my problem losing a data connection with full bars and no WiFi on has been resolved.
I urge everyone to at least try to get your SIM card replaced. I don't know how or why mine went bad but since it was replaced I'm back to enjoying my data all day long. I'm not saying it will fix everybody's scenario but if my SIM card somehow took a crap between iOS 5.0 & 5.1 then other people's probably did too and you may be one of them.

May 7, 2012 5:26 PM in response to bbddvvby yoshjosh,I'm sorry to report that it's still happening to me with 5.1.1. I wasn't able to send or receive any data twice today when moving between cell towers in Burbank, CA, even though the phone showed 5 bars and 4G active. I had to reset the phone before data worked - switching Airplane Mode on and off had no effect.
I also have had the cell network search disabled for a few weeks now and it hasn't helped.

May 8, 2012 4:24 PM in response to yoshjoshby tallweed,I've read most of this thread and I wanted to report that since turnning off Cell Network Search last week, I have not had a problem.
This is such a frustrating thing to debug. I've gone weeks without a problem but last week it happened every day when I left the house to walk the dog. I turned off the Cell Network Search on Wednesday and I've gone six days without a problem. That's not long enough to be conclusive.
I will leave it as is for another week. If I've not had a problem in that time, I will try turning the Cell Network Search back on to see if I can cause the problem to reoccur.

May 14, 2012 9:08 AM in response to tperoby Gary Cox1,Running 5.1 on a 4s the problem had been fixed for me, ever since ugrading to 5.1 I never once had a problem since the 5.1 upgrade. The day after upgrading to the latest update 5.1.1 I had the same problem again, lost cell data services, I had to power the phone off and back on to restore it.
Definately a software issue somewhere... Gary
