My iPhone 4S keeps switching to speaker phone when I make a call...

Anyone else have this problem? How do I fix it?

I removed both the case and the scren protector, restarted the phone – and nothing changed. The problem is also sporadic, which leads me to think that interference with the sproximity sensor isn't the problem. If something were interfering with it, you'd expect it would be a consistent and not a sporadic problem.

I've seen numerous complaints similar to mine, which suggests it's a pervasive issue. If anyone finds a consistent, workable solution, please post it here. Thanks!

I have used both iPhone 4 & iPhone 4s. I can confirm it seems to be only a problem with iPhone 4s. The only way to over come this issue temporarily when making a call or receiving a call cover the sensor. This needs to be resolved by Apple quickly, unfortunately the iOS 5.1 doesnt seem to be fixing it so far. Will hope for the best.

i was after posting following another thread here. tried the answer:

"My 'Settings/General/Accessibility/Physical & Motor/Incoming calls' setting was set to default. I figured this meant it would go to an active bluetooth device if it found one since the choices were Default, Headset, and Speaker. Apparently this assumption is incorrect. When I changed the setting from Default to Bluetooth it resovled my problem. Incoming calls now connect to the headset if it is active and to the phone when it's not.

'Bluetooth' is not an option. Do you mean 'Headset?'"

and currently it works - that's a iphone 4s issue i guess with headsets and with backups from iphone 4 or even 3g. apple should have a look into this. it's a but, not a feature. will post new experiences here...

Its the same old issue, dear me they still not sorted it out on the 4s, had this issue on the i4, and tried two different phones untill learnt to live with it. It is the proximity sensor and no Apple dont admit a problem. Test it by calling a number and moving finger close to the ear position, screen shouldgo black about 1 cm from phone, if not its to sensative, you will mute calls put people on hold etc as screen becomes live. Many of my friends have the same issue on the i4, so I guess its ongoing. Good luck with any resolution, if you find one drop me a line or wait for the i5 maybe, just maybe the re-designe may sort it out once and for all.

Me too.

No case

No bluetooth

I make a call and it goes to speaker directly. I try to turn it off and it won't go off speaker but the icon is no longer blue.

Oh, and the person I'm trying to talk to can't hear me.

If I have the head set (apple standard delivered with the phone) it doesn't matter. Putting it into or out of the phone doesn't make a difference.

And it happens sporadically.
