You either bought a hacked iPhone or a carrier locked iPhone, without contract. Officially unlocked iPhones were NOT available in the US last year.
thanks wjosten, I guess then I bought a carrier locked iphone without contract. Since now in the apple site, they sell them as "unlocked" phones. Is there a chance that I will be able to use mine abroad as well?

Unfortunately, no. Your phone is locked to AT&T and only AT&T could authorize the official unlocking of your phone. But, AT&T will not unlock an iPhone for anyone for any reason. Your best option is to sell it on eBay.
