I recently had my IMac w/dual Intel processors upgraded to 3 gig ram & 1 terabyte hard disc. My Trash has 300+ items in it. When I attempt to empty the trash, it starts to review 20,000+ items. I have stopped the emptying process because I don't want it to dump those 20,000+ items.
Wht do I do?
If you don't want to dump/delete those 20,000 items, what are they doing in the trash?
Well those 300+ items may contains zip files, applications etc. Take a look in your trash and make sure there's nothing you need in there then empty it. (The window title should have a trashcan and Trash written on top)

So search your trash for the files you need. Then restore them. Then delete the rest.
Go on do it. Think of the positive side. You get back heaps of HD space.
I did it -- no catasrophes.
Like someone said, it probably said 20,000+ items because the some of the items in the trash can were folders or zip files that contained LOTS of other files within.
