iTunes 10.5 cutting off music?

I've recently purchased a new Macbook Air and I love it except for a minor issue.

I have migrated from a PC to Mac and everything has gone smoothly so far when setting up iTunes. I had my music library on an external hard drive that was originally hoooked up to my desktop PC. However, this hard drive is not very practical when it comes to portability. So, I purchased a new WD My Passport for Mac. I hooked them both up and transferred all my media from the old drive to the new one. I then imported all the media into my iTunes and chose the new external drive as my download location for new purchases.

However, I have noticed that a couple songs (I haven't listened to all 1100+ songs yet) are cut off. And not just a couple seconds at the end of the song. It's anywhere from 50s - 1 min at the end of the song that is cut off. The song continues to play, but with "dead air". This happens when playing the song from iTunes or my iPod/iPhone.

Today I deleted the songs from the new external hard drive, then hooked up the old one and re-copied them to their directories. I still have the same issue. The interesting thing is that if I play the songs in QuickTime I have no problems. They play through entirely without cutting off. No "dead air".

I'm at a loss as to what this issue could be. I am running iTunes 10.5 (the latest one) and iOS 5 for both my iPod Touch and iPhone. Mac OS X (10.7.2), 13 inch i5 Macbook Air. Any help is appreciated in advance. Thank you for your time and efforts.

Here's a solution if anyone is running Windows:

Right click the song in iTunes

Select "Show in Windowns Explorer"

Right-click the song and select "Properties"

Select the tab "Previous Versions" and on the bottom of that screen hit "Restore"

The uncut original version will show up from there and you should have the problem solved!

If it works for you, like the post so others can see it too! 😀

Ok, I have tried all of the above. I run windows 7 and had a few songs on one album I purchaced from apple cut short. Then over time many more songs started cutting off. I contacted apple and tried everything over and over and over. The final solution for apple was to actually refund me for everything I ever purchaced from itunes. I will not buy any more music from them until I get information that this snafu has been fixed. Just thought I would share. Also the problem spread to the google cloud with my music as well. I have songs now that won't play more than a few seconds. This would really suck for someone who had no other option than Itunes like Ipad owners.

You can also quit out of iTunes, then hold down Option as you re-open it. In the popup window, choose to Create Library and save yourself a new empty library with a new, unique name. Then go to File > Library > Import Playlist and choose your old library's XML file. It will take a while for your old files to import (my 23,000 songs took me about 3.5 hours to import), but I was able to do this and my songs are playing back fine now, and my play counts, ratings, and playlists are intact! I'm not sure why it worked, but it did.

THANK YOU joyofsoy!!!!

Your solution worked for me. 😁

Michael,

Recently, I had the same problem. I was able to fix my "corrupt songs" by accident, but it tends to work.

As iTunes has recently updated itself again, the solution is easier than it was before. If you know what songs get cut off, find them in your iTunes music library. There should be a cloud icon that has a down arrow next to it. Highlight the song, press delete, and then click the cloud icon. This re-downloads your song from iCloud, and seems to fix the problem.

I hope this works for you!

I'm having this problem as well. It has most probably happened since the last update of iTunes but I can't be sure. Identifying the songs that have an issue is a real pain as it affects so many. This includes songs downloaded as well those imported from CD. If this is an issue caused by a database update from iTunes, is the corruption able to be fixed or does it mean identifying all the tracks that are affected and downloading them again or importing them from the original CD's. A large collection will take ages to check unless someone at Apple can provide a fix or at least a utility that can identify those tracks that have been corrupted.

This is what I did. I went to the offending song in iTunes, right clicked on it and selected Show in Finder (not sure what the equivalant is in Windows, but it shows you where the file is stored on your hard drive and shows the file path). I left that Finder window open, then I right clicked on the song in iTunes again and selected Delete. It then asked me if I wanted to move the file to the trash or keep it. I selected Keep File.

Then I went to File>Add to Library and followed the file path I pulled up in finder and added the song back into iTunes. The song plays fine now. I have about 5 of these that are cutting off, so re-importing all of my music isn't something I wanted to do. If you have just a few songs, try this and let me know if it worked for you, too.

I've been having this problem for almost a year. Thank you to the people who posted solutions, I will try one out when I have three days of nothing to do... Grrr..... This is APPLE'S fault, not mine, so why can't I take my mac to the Apple store, tell them to fix it, and come back when it's done?? I paid for this music!!! I pais for the mac!! I paid for the operating system!! This is not any fault of ours, why do we have to fix this?? BS...

I have the same issue with my new MacAir, some songs playing but "dead air" part way through. The interesting thing for me is the song plays fine in iTunes on my MacAir. It is when I sync to either my iPhone or iTouch that the song cuts out. It also tryed syncing to my iPad and the song plays fine. Any ideas?? Thanks so much!

Awesome. This has been driving me nuts. Some of my songs end abruptly (artist's decision), so it was one of those things where I was never *totally* sure if I was going nuts or what. I'll have to check the actual files before trying this.

As for Doug's scripts, I'm not sure because it's been a while, but I use a script to alter my play count manually for when I re-add older music. Never caused me any troubles. Also, I haven't used crossfade since last year, so I don't think my current troubles would be stemming from that (though maybe it is).

You can always create a new library and import just one of your problem songs to see if it plays before processing the entire batch.

Out of curiosity, does anyone else with problems use Doug's AppleScripts?
