IOS 5 on iPhone 4 - Problems

I've started this thread to collect information and experiences from those that have the original iPhone 4 and have upgraded to IOS 5.

Background

This thread was prompted by a very frustrating call yesterday to AppleCare. I own an iPhone 4, and asked the simple question: "If I upgrade to IOS 5, will my phone operate at least as well as it did with IOS 4, or will there be speed and compatibility issues?" Apple did a very flashy tap-dance all around the answer, never giving me a "yes it will be fine" "it will be better" or "it won't be as fast". Nothing of the kind! Their answer got down to a dodge: "if you have problems, we will work with you", and "check Google to find out if there are problems". The first answer is exactly the situation I had with my old iPhone 3 (see below)! "We will work with you" means "upgrade at your own risk, if the phone performance is poor, but there are no hardware issues, you're stuck with it". And the second "check Google" answer was the creator and manufacturer directing me to an unknown third party, without accountability, for information. As if Apple doesn't know, or hasn't tested for full iPhone 4 compatibility. Right.

Previous experiences by owners of less-than-current iPhones that upgrade to a new and flashy OS haven't been great. My example is I had an iPhone 3 running OS 2. When OS 3 showed up, I upgraded almost immediately, not realizing how bad an idea that was. The phone did operate, but became very sluggish and unresponsive, basically, a real frustration. Of course, no way to back up to OS 2, it was a one-way street. No, a full restore or reset did NOT revert the OS. Apple's position on support was that there was nothing wrong with the hardware, so they offered no fix. It took almost a year of updates before the phone's speed improved, but never returned to what it was with it's original OS.

Why Upgrade to IOS 5?

Owners of previous generation products have always had this problem: do I upgrade or not? Will I get better performance, or will this be a side-grade, or back-grade? The reality is, as much as we'd all like the latest and greatest features (as many of them as we can get with our hardware, at least), we shouldn't have to pay an unknown performance penalty. Apple always presents the latest software upgrades to us when we sync, but taking it immediately, though logical, hasn't always worked out well.

So, until Apple presents consistently fully working and bug free upgrades, gives us a means to revert to a previous, working OS environment, or provides a support option for "permanent software damage" caused by an OS upgrade, alll we can do is share information.

So, does OS 5 work on an origina iPhone 4? What issues have you had, and have they been resolved?

I waited until October 17 to upgrade so I could peruse this forum for a while after the update became available. I updated two iPhone 4's and one iPod touch 4g and they all updated no problem and right to this point all three devices are working flawlessly. Sorry to hear of others having problems, but I agree with Mr. Black's analysis from earlier in this thread.

I echo necronym's comments–our experiences are very similar.

I have been performing updates on iOS devices since iOS version 2.x and have never had a problem.

WRT iOS5, I updated a 3GS, 2 iPhone 4s, and 2 iPad 2s all without problems.

I also have an iPhone 4S and it works just fine—no major problems at all, 'it just works'.

Has anyone who upgraded to IOS 5, had a problem with battery life, poor speed, or a complete disaster, taken their phone to an Apple store, or called AppleCare? Were your problems resolved or not?

Hearing the sucess stories is great, hearing of the failures, interesting. But what we haven't heard so far is someone with an IOS 5 upgrade failure, and the results of getting Apple's help.

Personally, I care less about how smooth the upgrade goes, or if there are huge problems or not. But if the upgrade results in big problems that are permanent or fatal, now THAT's a problem. If Apple offers no help, or is unsuccessful in getting your phone working normally, that's also a problem.

If you upgrade, had any of the common problems (battery life, black screen, dead phone, etc.) and Apple was able to fix it or replace it (or not), we need to hear from you!

We shouldn't tollerate a failed upgrade. If you got a new engine installed in your car, but it had less power, ran rough, got 4 miles per gallon, and stalled all the time, you wouldn't drive it that way. Would you not take it back to the repair place and get it fixed? And if they couldn't, or wouldn't fix it, would you not take them to court for ruining your car?

I upgraded a couple of days ago... I have minimal notification and location services enabled. I don't use iCloud or report Diag & Usage info (off).

Battery Usage (idle, black screen):

  • 1st night, 1%, 100%-99%
  • 2nd night, 5%, 44%-39%

I like the camera access from the lock screen.

iMessage is a little flakey, but seems to work.

I was the test case for the family and have no reason not to update the rest of the iPhones...

Ok for those of you havent said there are any bugs...there are a few, but they are big ones in my view.

Here is what I have:

1) Iphone 4 AT&T (32GB, black, v5.0 (9A334), model firmware 4.11.08)

2) Ipad2 Wifi only (Black)

3) Ipad2 AT&T (64GB Black)

I have updated to IOS5 on all of them and here are my major painpoints

1) IOS 5 does not work with any car stereo so far. I have an Pioneer Avic F90BT which worked fine with IOS 4 however after the update it cannot do anything with the Mp3 player. I verified this with every device I upgraded to IOS 5. My stereo uses the ipod plug so that it can communicate via the ipod interface and do all the controls via the radio. I was even able to play videos to my car stereo. Tried with both Ipads and the iphone With IOS5 - Not anymore

In addition to this it does not work on a Brand New 2011 Civic stereo. My girlfriend car can control an Iphone and it is also having issues. It indicates the songs, but when you select the option to play, no audio, no controls etc. Even tried the audio out jack to eliminate the iphone connector as the issue... Nope still not working.

2) My mp3 player is really jacked up on my Iphone 4. I did everything that Apple instructs you to do on the upgrade, including restoring, etc and now the music feature is useless. I hit play on any random song and I get no audio, no updateing status bar indicating that the song is playing, however in the upper right hand corner the play symbol indicator is active meaning its trying to play the song. Now I can go through 4000 of my songs and only a few of them will play, even they do play it seems like the entire database is messed up, I pick a song from an album and it plays another song. Several times I have picked songs and a totally different song comes up, but the title says the title, and the picture is of a different artist.

My girlfriend was about to update hers and then I told her what happened and now she refuses to do so. Thanks apple for helping out others with 3rd party testing. I have done previous IOS upgrades and they havent failed me until this new IOS 5 Update.

If you have 3rd party electronics that utilize the iphone connector I would urge you to use caution and wait until those 3rd party products have IOS5 support otherwise you are up a creek without a paddle.

The only problem I have from the new upgrade is a double text message alert. If I recieve a message (sms) when my phone is locked, and I do not open my phone to view the message, I will get a second alert of this exact same message within 3 to 5 minutes. When I view the message, only one message is shown in my inbox, so I know I'm not recieving double text messages. Just double alerts. No where else have I looked on this forum, or online, has any mention of this same problem. I am frustrated with the double alert. If I don't look at my message, I don't want another alert.

My ios5 upgrade on my iPhone 4 has been a pain! First it refused to finish syncing, and wiped out all of my music. I took it to the Genius Bar, and they wiped the phone, and set it up as a new phone, in the process deleting all of my app groupings, and a lot of phone call info such as recent calls, favorites, text listings etc. I could live with all that, but after leaving the store discovered that the alphabetical bar on my phone contacts no longer works! The only way to make a call is to endlessly scroll until you reach the number? HELP! I've restarted the phone 3 times to no avail.

Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> Repeat Alert

Is it set to repeat alerts (repeats are spaced at 2 minute intervals)? You can set repeats to never, once, twice, or 3, 5, or 10 times.

I have an iPhone 4 and upgraded to iOS5. I, too, have noticed a significant degradation in performance and battery life. I've tried all the trick noted and still have poor battery life. It takes significantly longer to launch apps and for my phone to respond when opening apps like e-mail or the phone. I never used to have to wait but now I may have to wait up to 5 seconds for the phone to respond when I do open an app. Any recommendations to resolve sluggish performance?

Nov 3, 2011 11:42 AM in response to bit-mover

I've had to go through three iPhone 4's in the last year. One almost every three months until it was out of warranty. Each time the screen would go black and no hard restart or reinstallation would revive it. Apple couldn't offer me a replacement for my recent one because it was out of warranty and instead the genius bar installed the latest iOS 5 on my iPhone 4.

After the iOS 5 was installed, it worked for less than an hour before it went black on me again. I tried reinstalling the iOS 5 on my own and it worked for a bit, EXCEPT it went black again but this time the phone is actually still running. I can swipe and unlock the phone even on a black screen but I can't see what I'm doing.
