I have a friend who has an old 3GS and offered it to me since my phone is older, I wanna get it off him. I know you can get them free with a 2 year contract, but I still have a year left and just wanna have the phone switched out. Is that possible or are the 3GS phones that Sprint carries now new models or something that support CDMA?
No, the only iPhone that works on Sprint is the new 4S.
Sprint is not selling the iPhone 3Gs, only AT&T is. The reason is simply that the 3Gs was always a GSM only phone, so it cannot work on Sprints CDMA network.
Unfortunately, Sprint uses a completely different method of communication between phones and towers (CDMA) - it's the same method Verizon uses. Everybody else in the known world uses the GSM method. Since the 3GS was made for AT&T, it uses GSM antenna's, which won't talk to Sprint's towers. Sorry!
