You need to upgrade to Snow Leopard v10.6 before you can upgrade to Lion.

But you need to make sure your Mac can upgrade to Lion before you bother with Snow Leopard.

See General requirements > Apple - OS X Lion - Technical specifications

  • computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
  • 2GB of memory
  • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
  • 7GB of available space

Ok, good on the RAM.

what about the fact I am only running OS X 10.5.8

You need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first.

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)

That will install the App Store for you. You can then download Lion from the App Store.

You can purchase the Lion thumb drive if you prefer to install it that way but you must have upgraded to Snow Leopard v10.6.8 first.
