As an FYI, here’s the last info I found on “Print to PDF”:
http://www.iphone-my.com/news/apple-pulls-print-pdf-app-store/
Since this was the only feature of this app, removing it was the only option for Apple. This is not the case with Save2PDF, Print n Share and other apps from Eurosmartz.
Although Save2PDF does work within itself, I wouldn’t hold my hopes up for it to print from other apps like before. I have an iPod and an iPad running Save2PDF mainly to print to a PDF file from other apps. Also, prior to IOS 5, when running the WePrint Server on my PC, I could print to non-AirPrint printers on my network or print to PDF from one device to another (i.e. from the iPod, print to PDF that would create the file in Save2PDF on the iPad).
When I upgraded my iPod to IOS 5, the feature no longer worked: “No AirPrint Printers Found”. When Eurosmartz released v1.2 of Save2PDF to support IOS 5, I installed it but no change (same with v1.2.1 and v1.2.2, this is the IOS 5 limitation). I still had my iPad on IOS 4.3.5 running the old version of Save2PDF (v1.1.3) so I started Save2PDF on both devices, started WePrint Server on my PC and did some tests.
The iPad listed “Convert to PDF:iPad” but no longer listed “Convert to PDF:iPod” which makes sense considering the IOS 5 limitation. Surprisingly, my iPod (IOS 5) now listed “Convert to PDF:iPad” and I was able to print and save the file in Save2PDF of the iPad. When I asked Eurosmartz how this was possible if IOS 5 blocked this feature, their answer was: “The reason why you could see the other device is that the IOS restriction is limited to apps on the same device.”
I then updated my iPad to Save2PDF v1.2. Although it was still running IOS 4.3.5, printing no longer worked, I was getting the “No AirPrint Printers Found”. Eurosmartz did not give me an answer for this but I suspect they pulled the feature out as per Apple’s request. When I deleted the app and reinstalled v1.1.3 on the iPad, the print feature worked again. (Note: for those of you on IOS 4.x, keep your old version of Save2PDF).
I now use a software called FingerPrint from Collobos which runs on my PC (http://www.collobos.com/). It allows ALL my printers to list on my IOS devices, including CutePDF. One great feature is the “Open on My PC” option. When you select it, it creates the PDF directly on your PC in the FingerPrint folder and opens up the file on your PC screen using Adobe Reader. Why is this so good? Because CutePDF and most PDF printer solutions on the PC pop-up a prompt for the “Save as” file name and location. Not good when I am not sitting in front of my PC! With “Open on My PC”, I can print multiple files back to back with no issues.
Things to know about this solution:
1) It costs $10 but they have a 7-day trial so try before you buy. I initially had problems getting the printers to show up but rebooting the PC and starting the app again resolved it.
2) It doesn’t run as a service so the window stays up on the PC screen.
3) This only works from the same network as the PC is on and, although you can print to PDF from other apps, the files go to the PC, not your IOS device.
4) It’s of no help if I am sitting on a plane and want to print to a PDF file as was possible under IOS 4.3.5.
Hope this helps.
