Q: iPhone 4S Poor Battery Performance SOLVED!!

iPhone 4S Poor Battery Performance SOLVED!!

I found the issue with the iPhone 4S battery performance.

I bought 2 iPhone 4S models on the first day. One for my wife and one for me. The strange thing was that mine would kill the battery in 4-6 hours and ran VERY WARM to the touch. My wife's phone worked great. It was cold to the touch. She would forget to charge it at night... and the battery performance was great... even better than our prior 3GS models.

What was the difference? I have my phone connected to Exchange for my corporate email. But exchange is not exactly the problem. The issue is in Notification Center. For some reason, I had hundreds of calendar reminders that kept refreshing on notification center. Furthermore, the reminders would flicker between the time remaining and the start time for the event at such a fast rate that it could not be read... (clearly a bug)

What is the solution? Go to Settings>Notifications>Calendar and disable Notification Center. You can still have the "alert style" set to Banners, or Alerts and you will still receive notices about your events, but it will not BUILD a summary in the Notification Center drop down screen. This is where the BUG exists. [Oddly, this does not affect my iPad 2, but is an issue for iOS 5 on the iPhone (different builds, maybe?)]

So, it appears that Notification Center has an endless loop in collecting the calendar events from Exchange and this is burning up our 4S batteries. Once you stop the madness from Notification Center, your iPhone 4S will perform as advertised.

Enjoy!

    Just got new 4S.
    Outrageous battery consumption.
I had to turn off most functions, as suggested by several other users around the world, and still the battery lasts only a day.
My previous iPhone, a 3G, would last 3 to 4 days with same usage.
And then again: what sense does it make to turn off all nice options
just to have a decent battery range?
Like having a Ferrari and going at 20 mph to spare the engine.
    I'm very disappointed.

I did the same thing.  My year old Iphone 4 was updated to IOS 5 and the battery lasted a very short time.  I tried several suggestions from different members and mag articles but no difference.  Since I have the battery % meter turned off my battery life has increased to levels of pre IOS 5.  I hope it's that simple a fix for a lot of people.

I found the biggest drain to be Reminders which are location-based. The GPS is always on trying to locate where you are, etc. When I deleted the reminders with locations (or removed the locations) the purple arrow disappeared immediately and now I am getting MUCH better battery performance.

I think the real problem is that the phone will not time out, but instead gets caught in a loop.  Be it mail notification searches or searching to reconnect to Wifi.  Turn off mail push and fetch also in favor of manual.  The fetch will get caught in a loop and drain the battery quckly.   I attempted to iMessage my nephew and found that it thought it was connected to Wifi.  It kept trying to send the message until the battery was drained, would not switch over to 3G when it could not re-establish the connection.  Make sure you're not spinning down the battery trying to reconnect to Wifi or trying to fetch mail from a dropped server connection.

This is my first iPhone and I heard a lot of good things.  But with this battery issue, it's driving me crazy.  I have already turned off most of the notification and location search.  It drains about 10% per hour without using it.  It made me feel like I can't rely on this phone if there is an emergency when the battery drains so quickly.

In case you all have not heard, Apple released an update last week that is supposed to fix the battery problem and some other issues with the iPhone 4S. That same update was available on my iPod touch as well and I believe you have to be using iOS5 to get it as well.

Go into your settings then click General and the hit Software Update. FYI you have to be using Wi-Fi to get the update.

I have already updated mine last week.  It didn't help.  My battery life actually went to 0% and shut down at 4pm yesterday.  Apple needs to address this issue quickly.  It doesn't make sense to carry a charger around.  It's suppose to be a wireless phone.

Well I am not sure about that but I do feel your pain. I see people all the time plugging up their smartphones to charge them and that seems like the norm now a days. These phones are like portable computers and what a lot of people don't seem to realize is that various apps can contribute to battery loss or lots of apps running in the background will drain the battery too. If you watch a lot of videos on your phone that will drain the battery.

Obviously there is an issue and the folks at Apple do know about it but there are also things we the user can do to assure we get a little more battery life out of our phones.

been there done that! updated, restored, turned off apps! the only thing i havent done is to turn off my phone entirely, i guess that would save some battery eh? i was using HTC before this 4s, and my battery lasts for days. the only reason why i bought this phone is because of Siri and now i cant even ask that Siri to show me the map home while driving because my location services is turned off! me, participating in this forum is a desperate act. its not cool to go to bed and wake up like someone has used your phone for hours... leaving u with no battery at all.

    @DDuchess,

I always use my in car charger when I am using maps or GPS because I know my screen will be used for a while and I don't want to risk my batteries draining down while driving. I used to have a Droid and at first my battery would last a day or two but then it got to the point that watching a couple videos or playing a game and then updating my Facebook and Twitter would all drain the battery and its the same with the iPhone. These phones can do so much now that you darn near need to carry your charger around with you on the go now. Unless Apple swears the new iPhone 4S batteries will last X amount of hours or days, carrying a charger around with us is probably gonna have to be the way around this. I already do this now LOL!

Yeah.. The first time I set the "Reminder" to remind me when I leaving/arrive at somewhere, the battery drained significantly.
