    I have this exact problem.


    iMessage is totaly unreliable - I haven't received messages, people don't receive my messages... Totally sporadically, not dependant on carrier, location, anything - just sometimes it works, others it doesn't.  I've switched it on and off and on and off again, and it just doesn't make any difference. 


    I need to know that my messages are sending and that I am getting what people are sending to me.  It's a basic requirement for communication.


    iMessage is firmly set to 'off'.

    I just missed an important invitation because of this problem. My wife sent me an imessage, it said "delivered" on her phone and it never appeared on mine. There wasn't even an option to send as an sms instead, because there was no error or alert from Apple! Very dissappointing.


    By the way, we are both using 5.0.1 (the latest update) and both on the same 3G network. She has an iPhone 4 and I have a 4S, but that shouldn't matter.


    Seems we cannot take the "delivered" receipts from Apple seriously. Kind of ruins the point of imessage.

    Here's a thought - (I'm also experiencing this problem).  I have 2 Apple id's .  Wish I didn't , but can't get around it.  Perhaps the phone is logged into the wrong apple id?

    Another thought. I just got on my iPad. It has been several days. The missing messages were there!  How do we set things up that the messages go to all my devices?  Or is there something that the sender needs to do?  (in this case, the sender also has an iPhone wih ios5

    same problem here... imessage says delivered, but the other person does not get it on the iphone.


    Also, sometimes i send from imessage on the Mac, and on the mac it says delivered, but not on the iphone, and the person does not get it. This happens on about 10% of my imessages (a lot!!).


    But worst: imessages sent to groups are even worst. Some people get them sometimes, some people don't (all connected to network, with imessage activated). This happens almost 40 to 50% of the times on group messages.


    This service is not trusty, i cannot trust a service that says a message is delivered, but the person as not received them...


    Please fix this, apple!!

    you can set up which apple ids and phone numbers to recieve imessages on each device in Settings>Messages>Receive At


    My iphone is the only device set to receive messages (to my phone number and apple id), so this doesn't explain why I missed my wifes messages.

    Totally useless messaging app then basically - someone at Apple should disable/remove it or bloody fix it. What is the point of losing messages silently?

    Turning iMessage off and back on again in Settings worked for me. Before I tried this the only settings visible were: iMessage (which was ON), MMS Messaging, Show Subject Field, and Character Count.


    The others (Send Read Receipts, Send As SMS, and Receive At) showed up after turning iMessage off and then on again. After that I was able to actually receive iMessages sent to me.

    I have the same problem suddenly between my girlfriend and me. She send me a message and it said delivered and an hour later I get a call as to why I did not reply.


    I think this was the first time it happened though but not sure (I should have replied)

    having same annoying problem, latest one recieved after 12 hours, tried too many options didn't work, guess this got worse after new 5.1 update. it is very annoying. have to switch to sms rather then this unrelaible imess.

    but what we gonna do this not iphone ios devices. Apple must to solve this issue. deffinetly it is imess problem, cos most of the time I use very good wifi connection and people which sends me imess they use very good internet connections. also I don't think our carrier got a problem.

    Having similar issues but with IPads (2).  We both receive iMessages sent to our 4s phones with no problem.  When we power on the ipads, those ongoing conversations that should immediately synch are taking 4 to 6 hours to do it.   This has been occurring since they released the latest iPad.  


    Possible server overload?

    Yup, another voice to the masses having issues with iMessage.


    Generally, I get two copies of everything - one iMessage and one SMS, completely negating the requirement to use iMessage in the first place but more recently, and more worryingly I've been sent messages from my wifethat haven't arrived on my 4S. Given that she's looking after our newborn daughter, it's pretty important to us that our messaging can be relied upon and we're not getting that with Apple right now.
