How do I get the nano to honor track order in playlists? 6g

iTunes 10.5.x

I've got several iTunes smart playlists that I'm syncing to my nano. For some reason, the nano doesn't seem to want to play the tracks in order, and when I look at the playlist on the device, the tracks are jumbled into some random (non-alphabetic) order. It's not set to shuffle and I've got Music -> Shake to Shuffle turned off. How do I get the device to honor the playlist order I've set in iTunes?
