My friend had an iPhone 4 with iOS5 and has recently switched to a different phone as his iPhone died on him.

My iPhone is still attempting to send him iMessages and obviously they are getting lost in the ether...

I'm not going to switch off iMessaging each time I want to message him, that's just ridiculous.

Has anyone else had this issue?

How can this be resolved?

iMessage should still send messages to any other phone that supports text messaging as long as you send it to that user's phone number.  Are you sending it to his new phone number?

If you are sending an iMessage to that person's email, they have to be using an Apple device with the new IOS5 for it to work as a text message.

    Hi,

He has ported the number he had for his iPhone to his new phone.

If I turn off iMessage I can send a text to the number and he receives it.

If iMessage is turned on it reverts back to iMessage for this number even though it's not in an iPhone anymore.

Have you checked to see if the "Send As SMS" button is on?  It's in Settings->Messages. It allows the message to go through as a regular SMS if iMessage is unavailable.

    Hi,

I have that selected, however the phone believes that iMessage is available.

    Hi Leah,

    Is that Southampton UK?

I'm from London, maybe it's a problem with the apple uk servers not updating when phones are changed away from apple to reflect that.

I'm going to hassle apple about it, as it shouldn't be happening.

    Having this same issue.

My problem is similar.  The difference is that when I try to send a text to a non-iPhone user, it won't send at all.  I tried turning iMessage off, but the texts still won't go.  I get a fail message every time.  Any suggestions for that?

It doesn't try to send as an iMessage and I have the SMS thing turned on.

I have a few suggestions that might help.

But first here's a short background information.

This is what i think happen...

When you "swith on" iMessage on your iphone.

By default it automatically send your numbers to the apple server (similar to registering your email in the "receive at"), which register your number to send and recieved iMessage.

note: iMessage only work if you have Wifi or Data (3G) switch on. If not, it will send as a normal SMS (unless you have "Send as SMS" switch off)

So this is what you could try:

    1. Get your friend to pop his SIM to an iphone then switch off iMessage.

    2. Instead of continuing with the previous messages, create a new message and enter the numbers in manualy.

    3. Try turning off the iMessage, then restart the phone before turning it back on.

    hope one of them help

I am having the same issue in the US.

I had a 3GS and switched to an Android based phone.  My wife now has a 4s and all messages from her were going to my old iPhone instead of my new phone.  My old phone does not have service, but still works well on wifi.  My messages would send fine, and I could send and receive from non-iPhone users without issue.  I then tried sending to an iPhone 4, and once again got an iMessage back on my old phone from that person.

    Fix:

I pulled the SIM card from my new phone, had the iPhone users delete and re-enter contact info for me.  The first time they send a message to me it goes out as an iMessage, but then re-sends about 5 minutes later as a regular text.  Once the thread has started, it goes back and forth without issue.  If they delete the thread off their iPhones, the process starts over again and the first one takes about 5 minutes to resend as a regular text.

I know iPhones with iOS 5 will always send as an iMessage first if that is enabled (and why wouldn't it, it's a great feature) but it needs to go to Apple's servers first, then resent as a non-iMessage.

I am not sure if others are experiencing delays in first run text messages to others and think the delay is teh network, when it may the iMessage function.  I would like to see some feedback from others if they are seeing delays?

One more addition:  I also deleted out the 1+ in front of the phone number in my wife's contacts list.  It may have been the cause as well.  This may be just a US thing too.

One of my friends (verizon) user broke their iphone, downgraded to an older phone. Also having the same problem. I can't send them text messages from my iphone without having to switch off imessage. They show up as blank texts on the other end. To see if it was my phone... i borred a friends iphone who had never contacted this person before... same thing, tried to send as an imessasge and would not go through.

I would try the sim-card removal method mentioned above but the verizon phone this person is using does not have a removable sim card. Apple needs to get on this. ***!!!
